In 2016, Audi unveiled the latest generation of Audi A5 to the world. To many, the changes were not massive when it came to the exterior. This looks just like the outgoing model - from a distance. Up close however, you will see a newer and more attractive grille, a more defined "Tornado" line to the side, and new lines on the nose which give a downward and aggressive look to the car's front. But it wasn't just the exterior design that changed. The new Audi A5 model range now utilises the latest in Audi technology both under the bonnet and within the vehicle. The new A5 is available as a Sportback, Coupe or Cabriolet. The biggest competitor for this car? The BMW 4 Series.
Our test car came with Audi’s excellent 7-Speed S-Tronic gearbox. This is very easy to live with. The car feels low and close to the ground and you can feel it grip when you take corners. Cornering creates very little body roll, and the steering is precise. Our test vehicle was powered by a 2.0-litre TDI engine which offered 190bhp.
The Audi A5 Sportback is at home on the motorway, and its sound insulation works well in keeping things hushed in the cabin. The 2.0 TDI engine can be heard when put under pressure, but it’s nothing out of the ordinary. On-paper, we are told that both the manual and automatic versions of this car will bring you from 0-100km/h in just 7.9 seconds.
Interior quality of the new A5 range is among the best that you will find. All materials are of great quality. If you are considering one of these, we highly recommend the "Tech Pack". Their current TFT displays and infotainment systems are among the best on offer. The TFT display in the driver's cockpit is a pleasure to look at and browse as you drive along. Because everything you need can show up in the driver's instrument cluster, it means that there can be less time spent looking down to your left at the centre console and more time spent keeping your eyes on the road. Everything is digital in the display and you can even take-up the entire instrument binnacle with a 3D google map. It looks great.
As already mentioned, the diesel can be heard when put under pressure, but it's not excessive. General sound insulation around the vehicle is excellent. The interior is extremely refined and the ride feels amazing - especially when you opt for that 7-speed automatic transmission.
The other big changes within A5 is the additional Driver Assistance Systems. Audi’s pre-sense technology now comes as standard. This is to help avoid collisions at lower speed. You can also pay for additional safety systems, including adaptive cruise control and lane monitoring technology.
Obviously, the A5 Coupe and Cabrio has limited rear legroom. However, it feels more spacious than some of its competition. If you need rear legroom, then I say you should opt for the Sportback version.
