Many people would consider the BMW 2 Series to be a 1 Series Coupé with a new name. The similarities are certainly there, but according to BMW this is a new car with plenty of new technologies on display.
There is a large selection of engines available with the 2 Series Coupé, all of which offer a powerful return. The 218i offers 136 bhp with it 1.5 litre engine, while the 2.0 litre engine offers 184 bhp. On the higher end of things there is another 2.0 litre engine in the 228i M Sport and this increases the output to 245 bhp. The M235i is the real powerhouse with 326 bhp on offer. The diesel engines range from the 218d’s 150 bhp 2.0 litre engine to the 220d’s 190 bhp engine. If you’re looking for more horses on the diesel end you can look at the 225d M Sport. This 2.0 litre engine in this will bring you up to 224hp.
Unsurprisingly, this is a rear-wheel drive automobile and BMW has ensured its precision by designing a chassis that works well with every part of the vehicle. The automatic gearbox is excellent, but the six-speed manual feels slightly clunky. Across the range the suspension is nicely set up and Irish roads won’t throw up any major issues. The steering is direct, but at times body control isn’t brilliant on corners.
The petrol engines are all extremely refined and nicely tuned. The higher-powered ones give the right noises at the right times. The diesel engines are slightly more raucous – which was a common theme in the BMW 1 Series also. One area that could be improved upon is the road and wind noise that get into this vehicle.
Inside looks like it was taken straight out of the BMW 1 Series and it all looks like a scaled down version of the 3 Series – which of course is a good thing. As per usual, BMW impresses with their high quality interior. Like the 1 Series, there are many items that come as standard in the 2 Series Coupé. Expect to find DAB Radio, SATNAV and Real Time Traffic, as well as Bluetooth and USB connectivity.
To the front there are driver and passenger airbags. Along the sides of the interior there are airbags integrated into the front seat backrests. As standard you will also find tyre pressure monitoring and dynamic stability control. Driving aids like Dynamic Stability Control and Forward Collision Warning also come as standard. For better vision the 2 Series Coupé comes with adaptive LED lights. These same lights also have corner control that illuminates the side of a road as you turn a corner. Also installed in this machine is BMW emergency call – this connects to the local emergency services if an accident occurs. This particular 2 Series is yet to be tested in the Euro NCAP safety tests.
The rear seating area is very small in the 2 Series Coupé and people over six feet tall may not appreciate long journeys in this - but potential owners will be well aware of this. The front is spacious, as is the 390 litre boot.
