The 4 Series was introduced by BMW in 2013. To many this car was seen as a replacement to the 3 Series Coupé. The 4 Series is available as a Coupé, a 5-door Gran Coupé and a Convertible.
There is a large selection of diesel and petrol engines available with power ranging from 184 bhp in the 420i SE Coupé to 431 bhp in the M4 Coupé. The diesel options range from 150 bhp in the 418d to 313 bhp in the 435 xDrive M Sport Coupé. If you have the wallet for an M4 the manufacturer claims a 0-100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. Opting for the 420d is a good choice too. It has a keen engine and good fuel economy. The more powerful 435i is great fun to drive too. The whole 4 Series range will give you a confident drive and all models inspire confidence when it comes to overtaking. The 435d is quick off the mark giving 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds with a top speed of 250 km/h. Even the 420i returns some interesting figures, like a top speed of 236 km/h and 0-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds.
BMW 4 Series owners will have the option of the Adaptive M Sport suspension, which offers a comfortable ride, although going over bumps will feel firm. The car has a 50/50 weight distribution and this coupled with the light steering makes for good handling on corners and bends. The 4 Series also has a very low centre of gravity and because of this the driver can expect a real connection with the road.
When idle the 4 cylinder diesel engines have a small tendency to rattle, but once it gets moving things become more refined. The diesel engines can be a bit loud, while the petrol engines sound great. The 4 Series could do with an extra bit of padding because at higher speeds a bit of road noise gets through.
The interior of the 4 Series is taken straight out of the 3 Series. Some would see this as a bit of a cop-out as they may have been looking for something a bit more exciting. The interior is of high quality and there are plenty of items as standard like; SATNAV, DAB Radio, Concierge Service, Bluetooth & USB Connectivity, front & rear parking sensors, Xenon headlights, and a 6.5 inch colour screen. There are also plenty of optional extras, but the prices for some of these items are particularly high. For example, if you would like to have a TV function within the vehicle you can expect to pay €1,254.54.
There are six airbags within the 4 Series and a myriad of safety systems like, “Active cruise control”. This is a bit like adaptive cruise control, but it works with traffic jams too. When there’s lots of traffic the driver can set the system to take over and it maintains a safe distance between you and the driver in front. As of yet the 4 Series has not undergone Euro NCAP testing.
If you opt for the 4 Series Coupé or convertible you will find that the space is brilliant to the front. Leg room to the rear is ample and it’s actually easy to get in there. Taller people will have head room issues though. What’s most surprising about the space in this vehicle is the fact that the boot offers a generous 445 litres.
