Ford Ka Review
This week we look at one of Ford's smaller cars - the Ka.
I was arranging my test drives recently enough and I figured maybe it’s time I start looking at really small cars. There are many good points to be made about smaller vehicles. For example, because they’re small they're usually more affordable. Secondly, on account of their size they’re usually a big-draw to learner drivers and people getting behind the wheel for the first time – effectively they are easier to manoeuvre and handle. Also, because of their weight, or lack thereof, they are generally more economical. Sometimes the smaller car can be more fun to drive too!
This week we’re talking about the Ford Ka.
Would you believe, this is the first time I have ever officially test-driven a Ford Ka? I’ve driven a few over the years but never on an official full-length test drive. What struck me straight away is that these machines are more practical than I’ve ever given them credit for.
The Ford Ka is a tiny motor, yet I still got two baby seats in there comfortably. This car isn’t really made for baby seats though. This car is made for the learner, or people who want to take the stress out of driving. I won’t insult small-car owners by calling them “run-arounds”, because for many, this is their main car. The Ka is practical if you’re free of kids and need something that is inexpensive to tax, insure and fill the tank of (4.9l/100km).
The boot space is tiny, but the front and back seats will fit four adults without much hassle. Head and leg room to the front is ample, but the seats aren't the most comfortable in the world, although when you consider that this car will set you back €12,695 you shouldn't be expecting complete luxury.
I will say that I prefer the dash in this vehicle to most Fords I've tested. It has a different layout from the Fiesta, Focus, Ecosport, Cougar, B-Max, and nearly every other Ford available here. The dash is simple, doesn't offer too much, and it has a bit of colour.
To drive, this car is most suited to cities. With that said it's not completely out of its comfort zone on windy roads - it actually handles quite well and body roll isn't an issue. Power on the motorway is slightly lacking with the engine offering a mere 69 PS through its 1.2litre engine.
The Ford Ka's top speed is 159km/h, so it will bring you up to that 120km/h on the motorway (0-100km/h in 13.4 seconds) - but once you get to that speed the road noise makes you turn up the volume on the stereo.

If you're a learner looking for a new car this would certainly be worth a glance. Likewise, if you're young, free and single and want an economical, easy-to-drive car, then who knows?
