The Citroen C5 is Citroen's answer to the Ford Mondeo, the Opel Insignia, and even the Mazda6. Historically, the C5 wasn't the absolute style that you'd normally expect from Citroen. It just didn't look the part. However, when the most recent generation was released, the critics eased off a bit. They've regained the French chicness that they missed out on in the last generation.
The Irish market sees a 1.6 litre diesel and it offers 115 hp. The performance is good enough from it, but if you want a little more poke, you can opt for the 2.0 litre option which gives 160 hp. There is also a 2.2 version which will offer 200hp, but we're yet to drive one of those. There is an option of manual or automatic transmissions in the 1.6 and the 2.0.
On the road the C5 sits on an optional hydro pneumatic suspensions system, which is where Citroen got its good name for suspensions. This can be bouncy on uneven surfaces and it can allow you to feel roll on some bends. The basic system is actually pretty good, and it would be our choice.
Citroen really got things done right in terms of refining the C5. This does not suffer badly from road or wind noises. Despite being diesels, the engines are muted and don't intrude on the cockpit.
The interior is made up of some very good materials. While the infotainment system is a bit dated, it's worth noting that this car has been on the go since 2009, and is definitely in need of a replacement. We reckon it'll be due in and around 2017.
The C5 scored a full 5 stars in the Euro NCAP tests. It received 81% for adult occupancy, 77% for child occupancy and 32% for pedestrian safety. We expect that any new models will score better in all departments. It has a good number of airbags and ISOFIX can be found in row two.
There is a good boot to the rear and the car is slightly more practical on account of row two being able to fold flat. Because the C-Pillar is coupe-like, there can be head room issues for anyone over 6-feet tall. Apart from that, leg room is excellent.
