Additional Info
It’s hard not to give Ford credit for their range of MPVs. Their selection covers all shapes and sizes with the B-Max, C-Max, Grand C-Max and the S-Max on offer. The Galaxy is the daddy of the bunch and it offers more space than many would need. This is one of the few seven-seaters on offer that can actually fit adults into seats 6 and 7. The closest we have test driven that does offer such space would be the Kia Sorento. The new Galaxy is versatile, practical and surprisingly stylish – the same could be said for the outgoing model, but with this new model comes new mod cons.
The engine line-up in the Galaxy is much the same as what’s on offer in the S-Max. The new Galaxy has one petrol engine – a 1.5 litre EcoBoost that offer 160 bhp. The petrol engine is only available in the higher Titanium trim. Because of the bulk of the vehicle the diesel engine is probably the better choice. On offer in diesel is a 2.0 litre Duratorq TDCi. This range offers outputs of 120 PS, 150 PS, 180 PS and 210 PS. The 150PS model offers 0-100 km/h in 10.9 seconds.
This car is long and high and you would expect it to perform badly on corners. This is not the case, the Galaxy grips the road very well and inspires confidence. Apart from that the steering is weighted evenly and the car offers a very comfortable ride. This machine deals well with imperfections in the road with a nice suspension set-up. This good ride is echoed in Ford’s other MPVs. The S-Max set-up is much the same as this Galaxy.
The Galaxy is all about comfort and when you get to cruising speeds it’s hard to find an MPV as refined as it. The diesel engines are about as quiet as you will find when travelling at motorway speeds. Of course it helps that the Galaxy is well-padded with insulation that keeps outside noise at bay. While the manual gearbox is smooth, the PowerShift automatic transmission ensures maximum comfort while driving.
The Galaxy comes with Ford’s latest infotainment system, SYNC 2. This is a much nicer system than the last SYNC set-up. Unlike its predecessor, SYNC 2 is easy to use and very nicely laid out. It’s presented within an 8 inch touch screen, and on account of it there are far less buttons than ever before. Much of the infotainment can be controlled from the steering wheel. The dash is also improved and the plastic does not look cheap – at the same time it doesn’t look extravagant either. If you want a brighter feeling to the dash board you can also opt for a panoramic roof which gives a more spacious feel to the interior.
Like the Ford S-Max, the Galaxy was awarded five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests. In both child and adult occupancy it scored an excellent 87%, while pedestrian safety was awarded 79% and safety assist was awarded 71%. Features in the Galaxy include Ford’s new Intelligent Speed Limiter – what this does is it limits the speed of your car based on the speed limit in the area you are driving. It is optional to turn on and it is very clever technology.
The space in this vehicle is phenomenal. There is plenty of room for all occupants. Most impressive is the fact that adults can fit into seats 6 and 7 – although we don’t imagine that that will happen too often.
