Lacks old Ka's handling, Fiat plastics, cramped rear

Style & Design
9/10

In 1996 the then-new Ka was a revelation. It looks wild, drive superbly and was good enough to last 12 years. The 2008 model is ridiculously cute where the original was bold and should prove popular with its target audience, as a result.

Performance
6/10

It doesn't matter which engine you choose - they're as slow as each other. The 1.2 isn't very sonorous but it makes more financial sense so pick that one. The 1.3 diesel's a better engine and vital if you have a long commute, but otherwise not worth it.

Ride & Handling
5/10

The Ka is a crushing disappointment compared to the friskiness of the old model. There's too much roll, the steering lacks bite and precision and it's no fun to drive hard. The ride's not bad, though.

Interior & Ergonomics
6/10

It's surprising how like the Fiat 500 (they're essentially the same car) feels inside and this isn't a good thing. The driving position is uncomfortable for taller drivers, the pedalbox is cramped and the seat doesn't adjust enough. The switchgear location is fine, though.

Quality & Refinement
6/10

While the handling might be gone to pot the ride comfort and overall refinement is streets ahead of the old model. The cabin plastics are poor, though, and it doesn't feel anything as well made as the rest of the range, sadly.

Safety
5/10

Only two airbags are standard, which is a bit rubbish compared to the Fiat 500's seven standard 'bags. It'll probably hold up OK in a crash but ESC, which would prevent the crash happening in the first place, isn't offered.

Space & Practicality
6/10

The 2008 Ka really doesn't move the game on at all in terms of space or practicality. It's OK for a city car, I suppose, but the likes of the Hyundai i10 or Suzuki Splash make it look cramped and awkward.

Value & Running Costs
7/10

Although the entry-point is cheap the Ka is stripped out to get there (manual windows, anyone?) Titanium models are well equipped but its used value is questionable - it is a Fiat underneath it all. Both are Band A cheap to run and both sip fuel.

Equipment
7/10

The base model is cheap but you wind your own windows and stick your key in the door to unlock it - very 1980s. It gets alloys and foglights, bizarrely, but only two airbags. For almost two grand more, the Titanium adds painted bumpers, A/C, electric windows and mirrors and remote locking. No ESC.

Engine Specifications
6/10

Only two engines are offered and both are from Fiat - a gutless and coarse 1.2-litre petrol and a smooth but breathless 1.3-litre diesel with around the same performance and power. Both are Band A emitters, too, rendering the diesel a bit pointless for most buyers.
