During 2015 the Honda CR-V received a subtle facelift. The vehicle looks only a small bit different than before. The major changes in this car are under the hood and by way of safety. Once upon a time there was a very large 2.2 litre engine available in the Honda CR-V. This engine was a work horse but it was expensive to tax on account of high CO2 emissions. There were other engine variants available at the time too. There is no longer a choice when it comes to engine size and to many CR-V fans this may be a good thing.
The updated CR-V is now only available with one engine. That is a very capable 1.6 litre i-DTEC diesel engine. The good news for punters is that this reduction in engine size means that the manufacturer can now sell the vehicle at a more reasonable price. Because of lower CO2 emissions the VRT is lower on the car when it lands in Ireland which means even further savings on the outgoing model. While the new engine may be smaller the technology in use means that it’s actually more powerful and it offers 160 bhp, whereas the 2.2 offered circa 150 bhp.
The steering of the CR-V is a bit too light and isn’t as responsive as some of its competitors. The transmission of choice would be the very smooth six speed manual offering. The automatic gearbox can struggle when trying to find the next gear. The suspension soaks up road imperfections very smoothly and the grip of the vehicle is excellent.
The CR-V is perhaps the most refined SUV among the likes of the Mazda CX-5, the outgoing Kia Sportage and the Ford Kuga. Honda really focused on keeping the new engine as smooth as possible. The diesel is quiet and the insulation around the CR-V is excellent. This makes for a very comfortable cabin.
The ride height in the CR-V is brilliant and it feels higher than many of its competitors. Everything in the CR-V is of high quality. The seats are wonderfully comfortable and the dash board is made of good quality plastics. The small things that have changed in here include higher quality furnishings and seat upholsteries. The biggest change is in the infotainment system which is very easy to use and is highly connected. The Honda Connect system uses a seven inch screen and it can easily connect to phones. It also offers connectivity to a certain number of apps like AHA (this reads Facebook and Twitter feeds).
All Honda CR-Vs come with the very intuitive City Brake Active System. This uses radar to scan the surrounds of the CR-V. If the car thinks that you are in danger of a collision it automatically applies the brakes. This system only works at speeds between 5 and 32 km/h. The CR-V also offers Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control. This is a great cruise control system that keeps you a safe distance from the car in front. If the car in front slows down then so too does the CR-V. This system also takes surrounding lane environments into consideration while in operation. So if the car senses that somebody is about to switch over to your lane in front of you it automatically slows down and maintains a safe distance.
The CR-V’s space is among the best in its class. The head and leg room to the front and rear is excellent. The boot space is pretty much unmatched by immediate rivals.
