Style & Design
8/10

Don’t let the pictures fool you – the new i30 is much better looking in the metal. Its glum expression isn’t really noticeable at all – instead you’re drawn to the confident detailing, pert shape and excellent stance. It’s easily Hyundai’s best looking car and it manages to be roomy too.

Performance
7/10

The 1.4 manages to haul the i30 to 100km/h in 12.6 seconds and is willing to be revved hard if necessary but the 1.6-litre diesel is the star here. The low-power version is about as quick as the petrol off the line but zippier in the real world. The high-power diesel feels 2.0-litre quick.

Ride & Handling
8/10

We always knew Hyundai had good chassis engineers (Exhibit A: the Coupe) but the everyday cars never handled with much finesse. Until now. The i30 has a sharp, quick steering, a comfortable ride quality and superb refinement. Shame the budget tyres are so low on grip, though.

Interior & Ergonomics
9/10

Now that Hyundai put the wiper/indicator stalks on the right side anyone can drive one without retraining the brain. Hyundai’s awful aftermarket stereos are gone, too, so i30 buyers can benefit from the excellent cabin layout, intelligent switchgear placement and superb driving position.

Quality & Refinement
8/10

The i30 is surprisingly mature in the way it rides, with very little road noise and proper bump isolation. The cabin is also impressively well made, with solid switches, soft-touch materials and a quality feel to its overall construction. It’s got a seriously upmarket feel inside.

Safety
8/10

With an expected 5 Star NCAP rating (as achieved by the identical Kia Cee’d) the i30 is a safe car in a shunt and comes with six airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts and anti-whiplash seats. Only the top Premium model comes with ESP as standard but Hyundai may improve this with the VRT changes.

Space & Practicality
8/10

Although it’s looks smaller than the likes of the Focus there’s no shortage of room in the new i30. It’s got plenty of room up front, there’s enough space in the back to accommodate a couple of adults on a long trip and a sizeable boot too. It’s even got lots of in-dash storage, too.

Value & Running Costs
8/10

Not only do you get a good looking, well made car that’s nice to drive with a fine warranty, it’s also loaded with equipment while costing the same money as a rather basic mainstream rival. Running costs are especially low while depreciation, often a Hyundai sore point, should be strong too.

Equipment
9/10

All get 6 airbags, A/C, alarm, 4 electric windows, i-Pod connection, 16-inch alloys, remote stereo controls & fog lamps. The Deluxe adds climate control, electric folding mirrors, leather steering wheel & half-leather seats for €1k more. Premium adds ESP, a sunroof & cruise control for another €2k.

Engine Specifications
8/10

There are three engine options in the i30 – the capable but slightly overworked 1.4 and two superb 1.6-litre diesels, one with 90hp and the other with 110hp. Not only are they smooth and strong, they’re also super frugal and as happy in town as on the open road. Low CO2 outputs too.
