With its modern sweeping lines and stylish looks, the Hyundai i40 Tourer offers a large interior with an impressive amount of kit as standard.
The i40 Tourer is offered with the same single diesel option as the saloon. It gets a 1.7 litre diesel engine with an admirable 140bhp mated to a 6-speed manual or an optional automatic transmission. That power number helps the i40 to a very respectable level. Even with the estates larger body mass, it suits the car well. The steering is accurate but the car can feel quite soft through the corners. While it may be as much as a driver’s car as the Ford Mondeo, the majority of buyers will be more than happy with its ride. It’s a solid motorway cruiser too.
If you are looking for an estate with engaging driving dynamics, then the i40 Tourer is perhaps not the top choice. It is much more at home cruising on a motorway then it is tackling an Irish B road. Its steering is quite light and lacks feel in these conditions but it still handles itself impressively in the corners with body lean kept to a minimum. What the Hyundai i40 Tourer is however is a very comfortable ride. It soaks up everyday road imperfections with ease and is quite blissful on longer journeys.
The i40 Tourer, like it saloon sibling, comes with a choice of four trim levels. These are Comfort, Executive, Executive Plus and Executive plus Auto while the i40 Tourer is available with a fifth top of the range Premium trim line. The top level cars come with a huge amount of kit and tech, but Hyundai are no longer the budget choice and it all comes with a price. The i40 like the rest of the Hyundai range, has grown up a lot over the last number of years and is a deserved class leader is terms of build quality, interior space and an economical engine option.
The i40 Tourer replicates the saloon for build quality and the extensive use of quality materials throughout is evident. It looks modern and it feels fresh. It gets a stylish exterior design and the interior and cabin reflect that. Executive Plus and Premium include a specification that brings a touch screen satellite navigation system, heated seats, DAB radio, full smartphone connectivity and rear privacy glass. All of the switchgear feels solid to the touch and ergonomics are excellent. Some of the lower down plastics may be of a lower quality but you could say the same about most competitors.
The Hyundai i40 Tourer scored the full five star rating in Euro NCAP crash testing making it a very safe family estate. It gets an identical level of safety kit as that of its saloon sibling that includes seven airbags, electronic stability control and sudden braking warning lights. If you opt for the Premium trim, you do get some nice additional safety features like lane assist and road sign recognition.
The i40 Tourer is a very spacious estate car. Room up front is good while rear seat passengers also get excellent leg and headroom. Three adults would be reasonably comfortable in the back for a short journey. Storage throughout the cabin is very good also with a large door pockets, cup holders in the front, and big central cubby. The boot is a very decent 553 litres of space and the boot lid opening is large making it easy to get bigger luggage in. The rear seats fold to open the cabin up to a huge 1719 litres too.
