Kia will be launched their new Kia Sportage in Ireland at the beginning of 2016. The first Sportage was built during 1993 and took many of its components from Mazda. The second generation was released in 2005 and this time it used the same platform as the Hyundai Tucson. The third generation of Sportage proved popular in Ireland and lasted between 2010 and 2016. One thing that drove many people in the direction of Kia was their brilliant seven year warranty. We are now entering the fourth generation of the Kia Sportage.
Kia offers a 1.6 litre GDI engine which is in use in European markets and a 2.0 litre turbodiesel engine has been significantly upgraded. Both of these engines are Euro 6 compliant and according to Kia the upgrades result in cleaner exhaust emissions. The 1.6 GDI engine offers 132 PS and 161 Nm of torque. The older 1.7 litre 115 PS CRDi engine has been carried over from the outgoing model too. The upgraded 2.0 litre turbodiesel has been upgraded to become more efficient and it offers two power outputs, 136 PS with 373Nm of torque and 184 PS offering 400NM of torque.
Like the outgoing model Kia continues to use the fully independent front suspensions. However, this has been modified to better control the new body shell. These tweaks result in sharper handling and better ride quality. The rear suspension is also fully-independent and two-wheel drive models get dual lower-arm multi-link suspensions
The engines of the new Sportage are more refined than before. This is on account of a new heat-resistant engine block cover and a new timing chain cover that has an integrated acoustic shield. The diesel particulate filter also has a cover that apparently mutes its sound. Sound proofing around the interior is also said to be improved to mute outside noises. The 1.7 engine is still a bit noisy though.
The new Sportage comes with a seven or eight inch human-machine interface in the dashboard. This area has been designed to be more driver-focused than before. The new Sportage has more soft-touch materials than ever before and the seats are more comfortable.
The shell of the body has been made stronger than before and Kia used a lot of ultra-high tensile steel in its build. Airbags are available for the driver and front passenger and they also include side airbags and curtain airbags for both the front and rear rows.
This is the most practical Sportage yet. The wheelbase of this vehicle has increased by 30mm which means more space in the interior. The car itself is a total of 40mm longer. The width and height of the vehicle remains the same. Head room to the front has increased by 5 mm and the rear has increased by 166 mm. Legroom has increased by 19 mm to the front and 7 mm to the rear.
