The Defender was designed to do a job with as little fuss as possible. It’s as functional and unpretentious as a vehicle can be and we applaud its honesty. 2007 facelift removed the under windscreen vents, put 'Land Rover' on the bonnet and, er, that's about it.
Land Rover is coy about the Defender’s performance figures and with good cause: it’s very, very slow. We’d expect a 0-100km/h time in the high teens and top speed is 132km/h. Since its 2007 facelift, it is a lot happier at motorway speeds.
Ride and handling are much improved since its 2007 facelift. The suspension is still very stiff but not as harsh as before, while the steering and brakes are vastly better. It’s also cruises much better these days but it's still a rough thing compared to rivals. For the hardcore enthusiasts only.
The new interior might look a bit tacked-on, but it vastly improves the Defender’s interior appearance and ergonomics. There are proper dials now, LCD display, much better heading ventilation and substantially improved seats. The driving position is still terribly cramped, though.
The quality of the Defender is much improved, though it’s still not exactly a paragon of tight panel gaps and seamless plastics. Refinement is, by modern standards, non-existent. It’s loud (though better than before), bouncy and unruly.
The Defender has no modern safety gear beyond ABS and rudimentary traction control. It has no airbags, no ESP, no pre-tensioners, no ISOFIX and no side-impact beams. Indeed, the number of exposed edges and hard surfaces are worrying.
With 14 different permutations of body styles, there’s a Defender for everyone. New forward-facing seats make it more family-practical (and safer) but cabin space is still limited and none have a proper designated boot area, which puts passengers and valuable cargo at risk.
Despite its age and sub-standard levels of... everything, the Defender costs big money. That makes it very poor value, and while it might last forever, it won’t be the cheapest car in the world to run. Resale isn't bad provided you're willing to wait for the right enthusiastic buyer.
The Defender has only the most basic of toys as standard these days. Remote locks, electric windows, a CD player and alloys finally make their way onto the standard list, but comforts like electric mirrors and leather trim aren’t offered and A/C is a shamefully expensive option.
Only one engine is offered in the 2007 Land Rover Defender: a Ford-sourced 2.4-litre common-rail turbo diesel, which vastly improves smoothness and responsiveness, although it doesn’t really do much for performance. Torque climbs 60Nm to 360Nm, but power stays pegged at 122bhp.
