The second largest Range Rover in the family line-up, the Sport is a slightly compact package coupled with aggressive and sporty design to make it one serious SUV
The Range Rover Sport comes with a similar choice of engines as its larger Range Rover sibling. Your engine choice is also largely determined by your choice of trim level. Across these levels there is a choice of three 3.0 litre V6 diesel options with 258 and 292PS. The hybrid option is a 3.0 litre diesel mated to an 80kw battery to produce 340PS. There is one 4.4 litre V8 diesel option and one high performance 5.0 litre V8 Supercharged with 550PS. This Supercharged petrol is only available in Autobiography Dynamic trim.
This Range Rover may have the ‘Sport’ name attached to it but it is still by no means a small SUV. Thanks to its new lightweight aluminium construction, it is considerably lighter. This improves performance and handling while its Active Body Control system ensures body roll is kept in check while driving enthusiastically. Its steering is direct and precise and it feels more responsive in corners a quicker in a straight line than its larger sibling. It’s better off-road than its presecessor too as it now has better ground clearance giving the larger Range Rover a real run for is money in this environment.
There is a plethora of trim levels to choose from when purchasing a new Range Rover Sport. Six to be exact and these are S, SE, HSE, HSE Dynamic, Autobiography, Autobiography Dynamic. All models feel just as stylish and upmarket as the Range Rover and you get a generous level of spec as standard with the Sport including xenon head lights, automatic lights and wipers, dual-zone climate control, parking sensors, Bluetooth and DAB radio and 20 inch alloy wheels. As you move further up the trim levels you get varying additional levels of comforts like heated seats and steering wheel, two tone paint finish and self-closing doors.
Going up against stiff competition like the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne, the Range Rover Sport has a point to prove over its renound luxurious Range Rover sibling, and it far from disappoints. Its dashboard is probably one of its most impressive features. Besides being one of the nicest designs in its class, it is wrapped in soft leather, similar to the door cards and seats. The build quality is excellent and the extensive use of expensive materials is evident throughout. It doesn’t feel far from its larger more expensive sibling.
The Range Rover Sport has not yet been tested by Euro NCAP so there is no rating at the moment. However, its larger sibling of similar construction and similar level of safety technology achieved the full five star rating. It would be safe to say that the Sport is a very safe SUV. Each model gets a great level of kit as standard that includes a full set of eight airbags, parking sensors and host of electronic driving aids. There is additional safety items on the options list too like lane departure warning and a surround view camera.
There is a good feeling of space throughout the cabin of the Range Rover Sport. While space is good, rear passengers don’t fare as well as they do in the larger Range Rover. Headroom is ample and legroom is not bad, but you would expect more in an SUV of this size. There is an option to add two additional seats in the boot area but these are only really suitable for children. Boot space is a huge 784 litres that opens up to 1761 litres if you drop the back seats. Like its larger sibling, the Range Rover Sport is a luxurious as it is practical which is a huge selling point.
