The CLA Class arrived in Europe during 2013 and after one year Mercedes managed to shift 100,000 of these cars - which is pretty good considering that the CLA Class is quite a gutsy move by the manufacturer. Later, in 2015, the Shooting Brake version became available.
The coupe/saloon version of the CLA is available to the Irish market with a CLA 220D (2.2 litre) diesel or a CLA 250 petrol (2.0 litre) engine. Both are available with automatic or manual transmissions. The 250 is available with all-wheel-drive. The Shooting Brake version benefits with the same engines along with a 1.6 petrol engine, a 1.5 litre diesel and a 1.6 litre diesel. All engines offer varying outputs ranging from 109 hp to 381 hp (45 AMG).
The seven-speed auto gearbox does have a tendency to hold onto gears for too long, which is unfortunate because their nine-speed auto box found in other models is excellent. The range can be bumpy over uneven surfaces, but there is a selection of suspension set-ups available. It's grounded enough on bends.
Unfortunately, the CLA Class has a bit of room for improvement in terms of wind noise. The transmission's want to hold onto gears too long also amounts to more noises from the engine.
Comfort within the vehicle is good. Unsurprisingly, there is some excellent furnishings available with the car. Once again, the infotainment can be difficult to navigate, but as we always say, you will get used to it after a while.
The CLA Class managed to score a full five-stars in the Euro NCAP. Of course, Mercedes has an excellent view point on safety and they are usually to the fore with new and innovative technologies. They scored 91% for adult occupancy, 75% for child occupancy and 74% for pedestrian safety. The car has seven airbags, blind spot recognition and much more.
Head room to the rear is not excellent in the CLA, it does fare slightly better in the Shooting Brake. The Shooting Brake offers 495 litres of boot space, where as there is 470 litres in the coupe.
