Volvo unveils the all-new XC60

The all-new XC60 has been unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, and it looks like it has some of the dramatic changes that we saw in the XC90 - which is a good thing.

Volvo has unveiled the brand-new Volvo XC60 at the motor show in Geneva, and the results look excellent. The dramatic changes that we've seen in Volvo since the introduction of the new XC90 during 2014 are ongoing. In the last year, we have seen the increase of the 90 Series and we now have the S90 and V90. The XC60 has always been viewed as an exceptional car, but it has remained relatively unchanged since its introduction in 2008. Well the wait is over, and Volvo Cars Global tells us that the new Volvo XC60 will land in Ireland in time for the 172 registration plates.

The XC60 has been available for nine years and it accounts for approximately 30% of Volvo's total global sales. According to Volvo, this new XC60 is "one of the safest cars ever made" - which is a tall claim, but given Volvo's safety history, it is certainly believable. The XC60 now comes equipped with steer assist added to their City Safety system. The car will also feature a new system which is called "Oncoming Lane Mitigation". According to the manufacturer, this system uses the steer assist to help "mitigate head-on collisions". Steer Assist has also been integrated with the Blind Spot Indication system - which apparently reduces risk while changing lane. The car will also be available with Pilot Assist (which is the brand's semi-autonomous driving system).

In terms of power, Volvo will be using their hybrid T8 engine which is to offer 407 hp in the XC60. With this hybrid engine, this SUV can reportedly take you from 0-100km/h in just 5.3 seconds. It will also be available with a D4 (190hp) AWD Geartronic set-up and the D5 (235hp) AWD Geartronic. Other markets will benefit from the T6 petrol engine which offers 320hp (as with the Volvo 90 Series, the T6 engine will not be available in Ireland from launch).

Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design at Volvo Car Group, said, "“The XC60 is an SUV not designed to look down on others but to drive. The exterior has an athletic sculpture with a subtle, timeless quality. The interior is a masterful composition of well-resolved architecture, beautiful materials and the very latest technology - all perfectly blended together. The XC60 provides a true Scandinavian experience which will make our customers feel special.”
