The new Peugeot 5008 is set to be launched during 2017, but before we all get swept away by the new SUV-like look and feel of the new 5008, we've decided to sample the outgoing MPV 5008.
Recently, Peugeot are getting good press because of the excellent work that they've done on the new Peugeot 3008. The model, which is landing in Ireland over the coming weeks, is a huge leap forward in terms of style. It also helps that it's a good drive too. The new 5008, which we're yet to drive, was first unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. It has taken a similar leap in terms of style, and we're looking forward to seeing it in the flesh. After the launch of the new 3008 we asked Peugeot Ireland to let us drive the older 3008 again - to see how big the differences were. Similarly, we made the same request about the 5008, and despite the pictures showing a much more attractive looking SUV, the old Peugeot 5008 MPV still has a lot going for it.
First off, the outgoing 5008 is not an amazing looking car, but the same can be said about most 7-seat MPVs. None of them are majorly attractive, yet some of them, like the SEAT Alhambra and the Ford Galaxy, do manage to cover up the daddy (or mammy!) day-care look. What these MPVs lack in style, they more than make up for in practicality. The outgoing Peugeot 5008 is both spacious and comfortable.

The infotainment system is completely dated by this stage, but it's still enough to satisfy most people's needs. You still get USB connectivity, but I’m yet to see a touch screen on any 5008 I’ve driven in Ireland - which shouldn't surprise anyone considering that the old 5008 was first released in 2009. The cockpit itself is spacious and it wraps around the driver, with everything positioned for ease of use.
The second and third rows are spacious enough for kids, and three adults would happily sit in row two. The driver's seat is extremely comfortable and there are great seating positions available.
On the road, the 5008 is not a thriller - but the same can be said for most normal MPVs. However, this is a nice cruiser that doesn't suffer massively from road noise. Its suspension set-up was well balanced too and it soaked up much of the Irish roads that we drove on. Peugeot also aid in combatting body roll by making their "Dynamic Roll Control" available.
The Irish market benefits from a good range of engines including, a 3-cylinder 1.2 PureTech engine, a 2.0 BlueHDi and a 1.6 BlueHDi. The 2.0 BlueHDi which offers 150bhp, is probably the nicest of the bunch if you like a bit more oomph in your driving. The other diesel options (1.6 litre with 120hp) are slower off the mark.
All-in, the outgoing Peugeot 5008 is certainly not a thriller. However, it's an excellent machine in terms of practicality and space. On the open road, it is a comfortable cruiser, but perhaps it lacked in comparison to the likes of the S-Max and the Galaxy in terms of driver enjoyment. However, Peugeot are about to leave their competitors behind as they shimmy across to the SUV segment.
