Skoda Superb Review: 2014 Model | Superb | Car Buyers Guide

Skoda Superb L&K

This month we had the privilege of driving a Skoda Superb L&K for a week. This is no ordinary Superb, this is the most superb Superb on offer - that's enough of the superb puns - this is the highest spec and most comfortable Skoda Superb to date, and we know that because of the two initials "L" and "K". Laurin and Klement were the two guys who founded Skoda and as a sign of respect for these two the manufacturer has reserved their initials for the best they have to offer. In this case these initials do not disappointed. This is my second encounter with this particular car, I had it a few months ago for twenty-four hours, so I was more than pleased when I was scheduled-in for a full test drive.

This is a very luxurious machine and even with the L&K badge it still comes in at a reasonable-enough price - €40,615 for the model I was driving. But it's not all about the luxury. The Superb's 2.0 TDI engine, along with its DSG gearbox, offers 170bhp, 0-100km/h in 8.6 seconds and has an on-paper fuel economy of 5.3l per 100km, these figure means that this bus gives a small bit of oomph to mix in with all of that class.

The white leather seats, the fantastically laid-out infotainment system and the vast leg and head room makes pretty much every journey a joy. This is one of the few cars where I'd be perfectly happy to sit in back as well as in the front - while sitting in the rear I noted that I could even cross my legs in the cabin - something I haven't done since I last set foot in a 7 Series BMW. The front is a lovely place to be, the dash is impressive, the seats are heated (front and rear) and the air seems cleaner - the interior is refreshing.

This is a very smooth car to drive and it's one that gets the heads turning too. At the moment the Superb looks so nice, but in terms of style I fear that they don't get better with age. The back of the Superb really appealed to me when I first saw it, but recently I have found myself only really liking them when they're spotlessly clean - is that a bit weird on my part?

As you can see from the photos this is a large machine measuring in at 4.833 metres long, so as you can imagine it might be a bit tough to get into tight spaces. The good news is that the clever people in Skoda have made their "Parking assistant with Perpendicular Parking" available for this machine, so that should make things a bit easier for those of you worried about this aspect. This car will park itself for you.

Other nice goodies available with the Superb L&K include what Skoda like to call KESSY or "Keyless Entry, Start and Exit System" - this does exactly what it says on the tin. The 18" "SIRIUS" alloy wheels are very nice and have a black/silver design. The heated mirrors have a memory function as does the driver's seat, so if there is more than one driver for this car that is that problem sorted.

The CBG.ie verdict
This is a very positive review for the simple reason that for the money you pay you do get a lot of value. This is luxury at a reasonable price. Undoubtedly there are better performers and even more luxurious vehicles on the market, but they come with a much higher price tag. Take for example the Audi A6 - a 2.0l TDI engine at entry level offering 177bhp would cost you from €45,590, where as a 2.0l TDI A4 with 120bhp will start at €37,380. The entry level for a Skoda Superb 2.0l TDI offering 140bhp is €29,515, and if you want to opt for 170bhp the starting price is €32,465. I'm not saying that the Superb is better than either of these cars, but what I am saying is that, other than the badge, with the Superb you do get more bang for your buck.
