Limousines in Ireland aren't like the massive stretches that you find in the USA. No, while stretched cars are available, you would more likely see the likes of the BMW 7 Series, the Audi A8 and the Mercedes-Benz S Class. The S-Class is probably the classiest that Mercedes has to offer. They're wonderfully spacious, amazingly comfortable, and jam packed with all of the best technologies that this manufacturer has to offer. The S-Class is available as a saloon, a cabriolet and a coupe. It's most likely that the one you'll see most of in Ireland is the saloon model. This article refers mainly to the saloon. However, they do share engines and technologies. They are also available in AMG form.
Non-AMG versions of the S-Class start with a 2.2 litre diesel engine in the S 300D. This 4-cylinder engine offers 204 hp and will bring you from 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds. They also offer a hybrid version using the same engine. Their 6-cylinder engines start with the S 350D. This offers 258 hp with its 3 litre engine and will bring you from 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds. The S 500 petrol 8-cylinger engine covers the same distance in 4.8 seconds. The 12-cylinder S 600 covers this are in 4.6 seconds. For those of you with a lot more money, the AMG S 63 offers 585 hp and will do 0-100 in 4.4 seconds with its 8-cylinder engine. The 12-cylinder AMG S 65 reaches that speed in 4.3 seconds.
If you go for a top of the range S-Class, you will find a rake of amazing technology that ensures a good drive. For example, the car can read the road ahead using special cameras, and if they see a pothole they prepare the car's suspension to tackle them - this system is aptly called "Magic Body Control". To be honest, even the least expensive S-Class gives an exceptional ride. This is probably the most comfortable ride you're likely to find in a car. The only place where you might find the handling a little less than perfect is on windy country roads. However, it compares well to many other smaller cars on country roads.
The V8 models let through the growls that you want to hear when you're on the road. The V6s and V4s are extremely refined. Sound insulation is perfect inside this car and road, wind and wheel noise is minimal. Even closing the doors seem classy.
The best technology that Mercedes has to offer can be found in the S-Class range. This is undoubtedly one of the most comfortable cars in the Irish market - matched only by the A8 and the 7 Series.
While the S-Class doesn't have a Euro NCAP rating, it's one of the safest cars in the world.
This is a limousine and it is extremely spacious. The boot offers 530 litres in the saloon (which is smaller than the Skoda Superb saloon at 610 litres). The coupe offers 400 litre and the cabriolet gives 350 litres. The hybrid option in the saloon can go as low as 395 litres.
