Style & Design
5/10

I can’t say I care much for the Note’s looks. It’s got a rather gormless ‘expression’ which is rather at odds with the boxy rear end. It seems to have been designed to be functional first, but they really could have made it a little less MPV-ish.

Performance
7/10

The 1.4 and 1.5 dCi are only 0.1 of a second apart to 100km/h, (13.0 for the 1.4; 13.1 for the diesel), but on the road they feel completely different. The diesel’s torque makes it feel lively and unrestrained, whereas the 1.4 has to caned. The 1.6 is a zingy engine, but is blunted by auto box.

Ride & Handling
7/10

The Note is not a bad steer by mini-MPV standards. It’s no C-Max, but it steers and grips eagerly, with little body-roll or tyre squeal. It’s not sporty, really, as the steering is a bit light and vague, but at least you can enjoy the drive, rather than cursing every corner.

Interior & Ergonomics
7/10

The driving position is comfortable, if a little less than ideal for tall drivers, while the dashboard is rather basic looking. The major switchgear is all well located and easy to manipulate, but the electric window switches and headlamp angle adjuster are old-fashioned and clumsily positioned.

Quality & Refinement
7/10

The quality of the plastics used in the Note’s interior could be better - it’s got a cheapy feel to it even if it is extremely well nailed together. Mechanically, it feels solid and that’s reflected in its comfortable ride quality, though more soundproofing would be welcome.

Safety
7/10

The Note comes with twin front airbags, side airbags and a passenger airbag cut-off switch, as well as anti-whiplash front headrests. It also has ISOFIX child seat mounts and three 3-point seatbelts and headrests in the rear. However, ESP, parking sensors and curtain airbags aren’t offered.

Space & Practicality
7/10

By mini-mini-MPV standards (Meriva/Modus) the Note isn’t overly clever. The rear bench doesn’t do anything amazing but it does slide back and forth, creating lots of space for grown-up occupants. There are also lots of clever storage areas and useful family-friendly features.

Value & Running Costs
8/10

By small family car standards the Note is cheap, but even by mini-mini MPV standards it’s great value, because it offers so much standard equipment. Running costs won’t be high and resale should also be a straightforward matter, especially with standard A/C.

Equipment
9/10

The basic Note SE is very well equipped with remote locking, electric front windows (auto driver’s side), a CD player, A/C, fog lamps and a load organiser. The SVE adds electric mirrors, 16” alloys, trip computer, remote audio controls, rear electric windows, front armrests and climate control.

Engine Specifications
7/10

The 88bhp 1.4-litre petrol doesn’t feel particularly lively in the Note but the 1.5 dCi is much better than its numbers suggest, feeling perky on the open road and if there’s a load aboard. The 1.6 is an auto-only engine, but it’s quick, even with the annoying auto-box.

3/5

Great family car, great on long journeys. Love the feeling of being a bit higher up than other cars, it almost feels like you are in a people carrier.
