Additional Info
As we all know, Nissan released the new Qashqai back in 2013 and since then it has been receiving rave reviews. Unfortunately, the manufacturer decided not to release a +2 version. However, they have decided to leave the seven seats to the latest version of the Nissan X Trail. Many people are now referring to the new X Trail as the Qashqai +2 and to be fair, it’s no bad thing to be compared to the Qashqai. The new X Trail is similar in many ways to its smaller brother. It has many of the same design cues inside and out. It looks good.
When Nissan released the latest generation of X Trail one of the changes was a new engine. The old engine was a 2.0 litre gas guzzler, but it did offer a nice 150 bhp. The new engine is a 1.6 litre turbocharged 4 cylinder offering. On-paper it offers 130 bhp and a maximum speed of 180 km/h. Like the Qashqai, this diesel engine isn’t the quickest off the mark and it gives 0-100 km/h in 11 seconds. This 1.6 litre diesel is the only engine available in this country. It’s more economical than the last engine.
The X Trail’s suspension is excellently set up and it handles bumps and road imperfections brilliantly. It soaks them right up. On the downside this vehicle does suffer a lot from body roll on corners. At lower speeds the steering offers good feedback but at higher speeds it should offer a bit more to the driver. The X Trail is available with two-wheel drive, 2-wheel drive Xtronic and four-wheel drive.
The X Trail is a very refined machine but again comparisons have to be made with the Qashqai. The X Trail is not as well-padded and it lets in a little bit more noise than its smaller, and younger, sibling. The diesel engine can be loud too, but this only when the foot is put to the floor. In cities and at cruising speeds the engine noise is settled though.
Like with the Pulsar and the Qashqai, the interior of the X Trail has a lot of plastic. However, the manufacturer does a good job in not making it look cheap. The infotainment system is easy to use. The driver’s seat is easily adjustable, as is the steering wheel. Depending on the trim you opt for you will also find nice leather finishes, etc.
Like in the Qashqai, Nissan has taken safety very seriously in the X Trail. In 2014 this machine was awarded a full five stars in the Euro NCAP. They scored 86% for adult occupancy and 83% for child occupancy. Pedestrian safety scored a very high 75%. The vehicle is packed with safety systems including Lane Departure Warning and Blind Spot Recognition. It also offers Forward Emergency Braking – if this vehicle senses an imminent crash it automatically applies the brakes.
The X Trail offers plenty of space to both the front and the back. The car is available as a five-seater or as a seven-seater. If you do opt for seats six and seven don’t expect enough room for two adults back there. These seats are perfect for small kids only. With these two seats folded away the space on offer in the boot is excellent.
