The Zafira is a solid if unspectacular design that neither excites nor offends. You might argue that this is as much as you could hope for with an MPV, but the Ford S-Max says otherwise. The OPC is a bit OTT also.
The 1.6 Zafira takes a long 14.3 seconds to reach 100km/h (empty), so the 1.8 (11.5) or 2.2 (10.6) fare better. The 1.9 CDTis are even better, with the 120 and 150bhp models reaching 100km/h in 12.2 and 10.4 seconds, respectively. The 2.0 T is rapid at 9 seconds, but not as fast as the OPC’s 7.8.
The Zafira has just the sort of comfortable but informative handling you need in an MPV, being a little softer than the Ford S-Max, though not as precise to drive. Body-roll is reasonably well contained, but steering feel could be better.
The Zafira’s driving position is very MPV-like, so you sit high with a great view. The dashboard borrows a lot from other Opels, though, and is too upright relative to the driver’s position. The gear level also works in an odd place, but the handbrake, steering and pedals are well positioned.
The Zafira has a nice, solid feel to it throughout, which is part of the reason it is so refined on the move. Some of the plastics are cheap, but it feels well constructed. The ride quality is excellent if a little soft for hard cornering, and it’s pleasingly hushed on the move.
All Zafiras have front and front-side airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts, three-point seatbelts and headrests on all seats and adaptive brake lights. The Club adds two-row curtain airbags, and only the SRi or 2.2/1.9 CDTi 150bhp Design get ESP.
The Zafira is extremely spacious inside, as you can imagine. While rear passengers are well catered to (rear-most seats are for small kids), luggage hasn’t much room. Dashboard storage areas work well, but the rear fold-flat mechanism is annoyingly convoluted and awkward.
The Zafira is the benchmark seven-seat small MPV and is valued accordingly. None are exactly cheap, but resale is strong if you buy the right model. The diesels are very expensive but economical, and all should be reasonably inexpensive to run once they’re cared for.
All have electric windows and mirrors and remote locking (A/C extra on 1.6). The Club adds alloys and audio remote controls. The SRi adds sports suspension, 17” wheels, ESP, sports seats, rear electric windows and leather wheel. Design swaps sports wheels and suspension for auto lights and wipers.
The Zafira has a fine range of engines, though the 105bhp 1.6 struggles. The 140bhp 1.8 copes better, making the 150bhp 2.2 hardly seem worth it. The 1.9 CDTi comes with 120bhp and 150bhp, both of which are fine, while the 200bhp 2.0 Turbo is fun, though not as fun as the 240bhp OPC 2.0 Turbo.
