The Peugeot 2008 is a compact crossover based on the 208 supermini. Its SUV design means it’s more practical with extra space for passengers and a large boot. This vehicle received a minor facelift during 2016, and they now offer it with a GT Line trim.
The 2008 comes with a choice of one petrol engine and one diesel engine with three varying power outputs. The petrol option is a three cylinder 1.2 litre PureTech with 82bhp. It comes with a choice of a 5-speed manual gearbox or Peugeot’s Ecomatique automatic transmission. The diesel engine is a four cylinder 1.6 litre BlueHDi with a choice of 75, 99 or 120bhp. Both the 72 and 99bhp variants come with a 5-speed manual while the 120bhp model gets a 6-speed manual gearbox. The 1.6 with 99bhp is probably the pick of the bunch with the best compromise of performance and economy.
The Peugeot 2008 gets an SUV appearance so naturally the ride height is slightly more elevated than that of a hatch. It provides a comfortable ride on all road surfaces and fitted with the right engine, it can be some fun too. It feels agile and grips well in the corners with body roll barely evident in the bends. If you cover quite a lot of motorway mileage, the 1.6 BlueHDi 120 is the best option. Its 6-speed manual means you get a more relaxed drive and marginally better economy. If you are about town most of the time, the 1.2 is frugal and the 5-speed manual is a better option than the automatic.
The 2008 comes with a choice of three trim levels, Access, Active and Allure. Entry level specification is good with items like air-conditioning, electric front windows, cruise control and speed limiter. It’s worth stepping up to Active however as this adds hill assist, auto headlights and wipers, rear parking sensors, a multi-function steering wheel and the 7 inch colour touch screen that houses the infotainment system. It’s worth the jump. Allure brings further comforts like tinted rear windows and chrome wing mirrors. You can also spec further items like a panoramic sunroof and satellite navigation.
The 2008 gets the same dashboard layout as the 208 supermini so the iCockpit is the focal point of the interior. The cabin is finished to a high standard and it really feels like a premium product, particularly with the Allure trim, with half leather seats and ambient lighting. The dashboard is constructed from soft-touch materials with a quality look and feel. The iCockpit brings with it, a ‘less is more’ approach so a lot of the cars function like the radio and Bluetooth care housed in the infotainment system. Unfortunately so is the climate control function which can be a bit fiddly.
The 2008 scored top marks in Euro NCAP crash testing with a full five star rating. The main reason for this was the Peugeot’s durable construction and good level of safety technology as standard. This includes six airbags, electronic stability control, emergency brake assist, automatic hazard light activation in the event of heavy braking, ISO-FIX and tyre pressure sensors. Higher models also benefit from hill assist and static fog lights.
The Peugeot 2008 is a more practical machine than its 208 supermini sibling. It SUV design means all passengers, front and rear benefit from additional head and legroom. Storage space within the cabin itself is not the best with tight door pockets and small glovebox. The boot is not bad either standing at 350 litres of capacity. This can be increased to 1154 litres by dropping the rear seats. This is more or less the same as its closest rivals the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur. Be aware though, that most family hatchbacks like its Peugeot 308 pack bigger boots.
