Additional Info
The Peugeot 308 SW extends the stylish lines of the family hatchback to offer greater versatility and an even bigger boot.
The 308 SW comes with a choice of two petrol engines and one diesel options. The first petrol option is the 1.2 PureTech that comes with a choice of 110 or 130 bhp. Each variant is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox with the option of Peugeot's Ecomatique automatic with the 130bhp model. Two diesel engines consist of the 1.6 BlueHDi with 100 or 120bhp with a 5-speed manual or auto option with the 120bhp model. There is no 2.0 BlueHDi engine variant available on the 308 SW.
The Peugeot 308 SW, like the 308 is brand new from the ground up with its new EMP2 platform delivering improved comfort levels and better driving dynamics. This is mainly down to it being 140kg lighter than its predecessor. The SW does not feel that much larger behind the wheel and still feels just as agile as the hatch. It grips well in corners and is fun to drive too. There is no GTLine trim available on the 308 SW. Like the 308 hatchback, its manual gearbox may not feel as seamless as the Volkswagen Golf estates, but overall the 308 SW combines good handling with a comfortable ride.
The 308 SW is available with three trim levels. These are Access, Active and Allure. As with the 308 hatch, trim level offerings are almost identical. The 308 SW does provide a decent level of specification as standard in the entry level Access with LED daytime running lights, cruise control, electric windows, air-conditioning and remote central locking. Moving higher up the trims, you get further creature comforts like sport style seats, auto parking brake, automatic lights, lumbar support, 17 inch alloy wheels and automatic climate control. You can also go to the option list for items that include metallic paint and a panoramic sunroof.
The 308 SW feels like a high quality machine from the moment you sit into it. Peugeot have lifted the game considerably since its predecessor delivering an end product with a real premium feel. The dashboard is a sleek design that adopts Peugeot’s new iCockpit layout where the steering wheel has been made smaller and you peer over the wheel at the driver instruments rather than through the wheel. It’s a unique concept but works well and blends neatly with its stylish interior design. The seats are very comfortable with an obvious use of quality soft-touch materials and contrast finishes. It may not be quite Volkswagen Golf level, but it certainly packs a more stylish interior than the Skoda Octavia Combi.
The 308 hatch scored a full five star rating for the Euro NCAP crash safety test and the SW is a very safe car too. Its new construction means it’s stronger as well as lighter and comes with a host of safety tech as standard. This includes electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, hill assist, ISO-FIX and tyre pressure monitors. You can also spec the Driver Assistance Pack on the Allure trim that includes active cruise control by monitoring the speed of the car in front and automatic emergency braking that senses a collision is imminent, and the car will actively brake for you.
The 308 SW is a five door estate which is good news for practicality. There is a good sense of space in the SW, but unfortunately there is no real benefit in the estate for rear passengers, as head and legroom not being improved that much over the hatch. This boot is one of the largest in its class however with a massive 660 litres of space. That jumps to 1775 litre capacity when the rear seats have been folded.
