Citroen's small SUV offers a nice mix of style and excellent comfort. The Citroen C3 Aircross certainly kept my kids happy!
The 2018 SEAT Ibiza brings back good memories from my first car. But, is it still all that good?
SEAT Ireland launched the 2018 SEAT Arona this week with prices starting at €17,995.
The 2018 Skoda Octavia RS is usually considered next best to the Volkswagen Golf GTI or Golf GTD. But can the 2018 facelift be the one to beat it?
From first glance the Kia Stinger GT is an awesome sight, and when you turn the 3.3-litre TwinTurbo V6 engine over its sounds nearly match the same levels of power. I say nearly because whilst there is a clear rumble, it's quite refined - that is until you rev and make this beast growl.
The Mazda MX-5 RF ticks the box that the convertible doesn't. Ian Fitzpatrick has been driving it and feels it's a near perfect Autumn hooner.
As a motoring journalist, Ian Fitzpatrick gets to drive lots of cars. The 2018 Volkswagen Golf R is one that leaves him a bit fuzzled.

The new Renault Koleos brings excellent space and a touch of luxury to the SUV segment - but will its lack of seven-seat options prove to be a good move for the manufacturer?
Whether you long for the BMW 5 Series Saloon or Touring, you can rest assured that you’re onto a luxurious, comfortable and very capable car. Unsurprisingly, high price-tags mean it’s not accessible to many.

All-in, and once again, Skoda has succeeded in bringing an excellent product to our market with a reasonable price tag attached. The Octavia vRS has a good mix of thrills, practicality and pure driving fun.
"anyone who opts for a car like this will have done their homework in advance. They’ll probably fall in love with the car, despite its flaws. The reason being is because there simply isn’t a car as practical on the Irish market. With that said though, SsangYong could certainly spend some time in making it better."
We say our farewell to the XC60 - one of our favourite Volvo cars
Kia has just launched their all-new Kia Picanto to the international press in Barcelona, and we've had a chance to sample some of what's in store for Kia's new city car.
I first saw pictures of the new Alfa Romeo Giulia nearly two years ago, it was the Quadrifoglio, and I can remember thinking... “wow, I'm looking forward to seeing that in the flesh.” Last week, I finally had a chance to see the Quadrifoglio up close, but sadly FCA Ireland hasn't got it on the Irish press fleet yet. So, in the meantime, I've had to make-do with the regular Alfa Romeo Giulia - which is not a bad thing either.

The SEAT Ateca is a car that I was really looking forward to reviewing. Sure, we had a brief drive in it at the Irish Car of the Year refresher day in Mondello Park back in October, but our time with the car was short. Recently, we got to spend some quality time with the Ateca, and it was worth the wait.

Skoda is a brand that continues to impress me. The Superb is amazing, the Octavia is superb (see what I did there?), the Kodiaq looks like it's about to take over the world and then there's the Skoda Yeti…
The facelifted Audi A3 doesn't look much different from before, sure there are some design changes to the grille, air vents, etc.; but there can be no denying that the car pretty much looks the same. Yet, for some reason, I've never been so endeared to it.
Today saw the Irish launch of the new electrified offering from Hyundai - the Hyundai Ioniq. For the moment, this car comes to the Irish market with a choice between a hybrid petrol version and a fully electric model.

In the past, the Peugeot 3008 was more MPV than SUV. Look at it now and you'll find that it's definitely an SUV. In fact, it’s probably the classiest and meanest looking compact SUV in its segment. Think I'm being too nice? I’m not.

The green motoring revolution is here to stay, and even the most died-in-the-wool petrolheads are going to have to learn to live with it. Thankfully, after years of the worthy but dull Toyota Prius...
Once upon a time, buying a Porsche was simple. Depending on your budget, you could either afford the entry-level Boxster or the range-topping 911. Nowadays, however, things are a bit more complicated...
It’s hard to believe just how small Audi’s range was not so long ago. In the late ’80s and early ’90s, it consisted of a handful of mid-size and large saloons and estates, with the occasional interesting...
Grass and tarmac: that’s what signals wealth in Oman. Not cars, but the roads underneath and the verges around them. Unlike Dubai or Abu Dhabi, Oman’s wealth is relatively subtle...
Somebody at BMW obviously ordered too many 'X' badges and the company is creatively trying to use them up. Instead of jumping on the “X Factor” 'band' wagon, the letter is being copiously applied...
So you're in the enviable position of having about 20 grand to spend on a sparkly new car: you lucky thing. You've decided that, despite wanting rear doors, you'd prefer to have a relatively small car...
So, here it is. The first ‘proper’ electric car that you can actually go into your local showroom and buy. There’s no hybrid system, no small petrol engine, no half-measures and it’s not one of those comedy...
There have been ripples of change moving through the small family car category in recent years. For a long time, it was hard to look beyond three major offerings: Ford’s great handling Focus, VW’s classy Golf and Toyota’s dull but dependable Corolla...
The marque attempted to maintain its quirky, technological image through this period, but the general feeling is that Saab was never really allowed to flourish and hence it nearly disappeared from...
Skoda’s Yeti SUV has already got off to a good start in Ireland in two-wheel-drive form, and for 2011, the range has been expanded with the addition of a four-wheel-drive model and new diesel engines...

Although most car manufacturers tend to mould their models to suit new trends, the same can’t be said for Mercedes. When the time comes to update one of its cars, which is typically once every six years...
It’s early December and here I am sitting in Alfa Romeo’s latest hot hatch, the Giulietta Cloverleaf. Thankfully, this is before the Arctic conditions set in – because it’s tough enough being trusted with one of the...
In a few months Ford will launch the all-new C-Max and, like the S-Max/Galaxy duo, it will come in two flavours – a sleek five-seater hatch to replace the current model and a practical sliding-door version with...

It’s 1967 all over again, as Chevy’s new Camaro lines up Ford’s Mustang in its sights. Should Ford be worried?
At a recent Nissan 360 Event in Portugal, motoring writers from around the world were given the chance to try all of Nissan's global product range, and that was good in some regards...
It is difficult to find an article that talks about Alfa Romeo without also mentioning that its cars are beautiful things but break a lot, or that the company is going through a rebirth at the moment...
Does the Audi Q5 offend you? It certainly will annoy some people, but really it shouldn’t. Would the environmentalists pour scorn on me if I was driving an Audi TT, or an A5, or an A4 Cabriolet...
It will be three months before BMW's all-new 7-Series is launched to the press and a further two months before we see one in Ireland but we've nonetheless been whisked off to the south of France for...
I have to admit, I enjoy those German Citroen TV ads. The chap they picked to play Hans is a delightful caricature of the German stereotype and he makes you believe that if a Citroen C5 can...
I have to confess, I'm particularly interested in the new Ford Kuga because it could be a new addition to the Twomey family down the line. My wife loves 4X4s (as so many women do) but I'd rather...
A Swatch is a watch but a Rolex is a lifestyle. Made with the greatest of care by people for whom watch making is an art, you can expect little change out of €5,000 for one of the most revered...
City cars used to be the grimmest form of transport short of taking the bus but these days, with CO2 being public enemy number one, they’re suddenly cooler than the ice age that scientists...
The phrase 'less is more' is bandied about like a favoured ball at Wimbledon, but there is no better way to describe the new three-door Mazda2. It has fewer doors and less rear room than...
I'm sitting at my computer, beavering away (which means I was working – nothing to do with the other kind of beavering that goes on on the Internet) when an email pops in from Mini Ireland inviting me...
Awareness of this smallest of Astons is not that high on this side of the Irish Sea. Priced comparable to a Porsche 911, the Aston looks like it costs much more than that. Granted, €180,000 will...
With the sixth-generation 3-Series still about three years away, the Munich firm has given the car a mid-life sprucing and, as usual, it is of the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it variety...
The front end isn’t dissimilar to the Peugeot 207, with its stretched feline ‘eyes’ and long overhang, but there are a lot more surface changes in the Ford, with the thick wheel arches and deep swage...
Inside, the Quattroporte is much the same as its predecessor. That means acres of stitched leather, wood or metal trim inserts and a weird-shaped clock in the centre of the dashboard...
The Renaultsport Twingo isn't over endowed with power by any means, but it makes great use of the 133hp available, with excellent traction and a chassis that deserves the Renaultsport tag...
Taxi. There, I’ve said it. I had to really. The Superb, in its previous long-wheelbase-Passat form, was a favourite with our driving social commentators. I was in one the other day with two friends and three...
The sudden realisation that you are getting old is a tough pill to swallow. Once you were a fresh-faced young pup, laughing at the prospect of turning 30; then 30 passes you by and suddenly the joke...
Attention all property developers. Assuming that you have any money left at all, what with all the ‘bother’ in your industry, there is an outside chance that you might be interested in changing your...
A few months ago I was on a stretch of autobahn, very late at night. We’d spent all day thrashing a Ferrari 599 Fiorano across the Alps, and we knew the car pretty intimately by now...
The Honda Civic reminds me of me, in a way. It’s an odd-looking thing – not necessarily ugly, but certainly different. An ‘acquired taste’ would be the nice way to describe it. It’s got a bizarre dashboard...
I swear I’m sitting in the wrong car. Someone said this is a supermini. Only a few minutes ago I was laughing with a colleague about the numerous Tardis references we’ve been bombarded with...
There aren’t too many reasons to be cheerful at the moment. Over the past six months, there is a good chance that one of the following list of bloody awful things has come your way...
The A397, linking the A-15 just west of Marbella with the small town of Ronda in Spain, is simply an amazing road. It makes its way across the Sierra Blanca Mountains for 80km and presents the driver with just about every...
Even in standard trim, Mercedes’ C63 AMG is a serious piece of kit. When you hear that a top-class tuner such as Edo Competition has treated the C63 to an...
The i10 is based on familiar Kia Picanto underpinnings but is a big step forward in terms of style and interior execution. The 'I'm a big boy' front end never ceases to amuse me and I'm also quite taken with the tidy proportions and careful detailing...
Buyers will appreciate the extra dose of style the three-door model brings to the range. The longer front doors and mildly re-profiled haunches are remarkably effective in giving the Mazda2 a sporty stance. It's not a sporty car as such...
It's not until I arrive at Donington several weeks later that I discover that this isn't a Mini Cooper with a bunch of JCW parts bolted on – this is a factory model that comes pre-modified out of the box.
Unlike the Focus RS, which grabbed all the headlines around that time, the Racing Puma only had as much power as its chassis could handle and its modifications all worked perfectly together...
The steering is precise, turn in is eager and there's proper feel and feedback through the wheel. Unlike the old Mazda2, also Fiesta-based but dumbed down to match the gormless appearance, this new Mazda2...
Creating the Speed hasn’t just been a case of upping the boost on the GT’s turbos. Bentley’s done a far more thorough job than that. Internal friction has been reduced with a fancy new crankcase...
People's opinions on the subject of the SUV vary wildly. At one extreme are the greener than greens, who justify their vandalism of off-roaders and their terrorism of SUV owners by saying it's for the good...
The new C-Class is powered by AMG’s naturally aspirated V8. Rather than being a tweaked Mercedes unit, it’s been designed entirely in-house by AMG. For historical reasons AMG insists on calling it a 6.3-litre...
1 minute 25 seconds. That’s how fast the F430 Scuderia laps Ferrari’s Fiorano circuit. That might mean nothing to you, but consider this – that’s quicker than an Enzo manages. So the Scuderia’s pretty special...
Whenever Citroën launched a car, the whole world took notice. Citroën was the most fiercely French, amazingly innovative car maker in the world. Its engineers would spend years answering questions...
Our particular V50 was a top-of-the-line SE Lux model with leather and wood trim, 17-inch alloys, climate control etc. Cabin quality is excellent and the ergonomics are virtually flawless, with the exception...
Our 2.0 Titanium model boasted a glass roof, 17-inch alloys, climate control, cruise control and half-leather seats but it’s rather expensive and really not worth the money. All you really need is a 1.6...
The car was a runaway success, with the second generation launched earlier this year set to increase sales further. Or is it? Despite the Mini surpassing the one million sales mark in April, we can’t help but wonder...
The S5, being a front-engined, V8-powered, fourwheel-drive coupé, had a slight tendency to understeer through tighter bends, which is understandable but not a whole lot of fun, while...
It’s quite incredible stepping back into the Focus ST so long after it was launched. This remains the best all-round hot-hatch package, unless you really want to spend a lot more money. When you...
Sales of pickup trucks have doubled here in Ireland compared to the same period last year, thanks to the arrival of a plethora of new vehicles on the market. And these new arrivals are more comfortable...
he form you see here has been tweaked and facelifted on a number of occasions but the basics remain the same. There is always the discreet styling, the superb build quality and the excellent diesel engines...
Three engines are on offer: a 1.5-litre petrol developing 108hp; a 1.8-litre 144hp petrol; and a 2-litre 138hp diesel. It’s the first time since the late 1980s that the model has been offered with...
urn the key and the 1.6-litre turbo-charged engine barks to life and idles with disgruntled aggression. When you rev it, it growls with surprising volume, rattling nearby windows and giving the...
As good a bargain as the petrol models are, the diesel is insanely good value. For €24,000 you get a perky, refined and extremely frugal 1.6-litre diesel engine mated to a snappy gearbox and light clutch...
Let’s not beat about the bush; the new Dodge Nitro will sell for its brash face as much as anything else. It’s very much in keeping with the Dodge ‘Grab Life by the Horns’ philosophy thanks to a blunt...
Forget the power and the torque and all that hoo-ha! Trust me, it’s very, very fast by ordinary car standards and we’ve-just-been-rear-ended-by-Concorde fast compared to most other luxury cars...
Opel goes for the chunky urban SUV look, complete with tough looking plastic cladding and all the usual paraphernalia that manufacturers stick onto these cars to make them look like they...
Jaguar wisely chose not to shout the XKR’s abilities too loudly, opting instead for subtle refinement like the new bonnet and wing vents, a deeper front apron, wire mesh grilles, larger wheels and quad...
This 2.0-litre engine, which is due to be upgraded, is a fine unit and makes motorway driving and long spells in traffic a breeze, while returning decent fuel consumption. On paper, it’s the fastest of...
It’s on a par with the best slushbox BMW makes in terms of smoothness and intuitiveness. But more than a pretty face, the 159 is also the best-made Alfa… well, ever! I’ve driven many in my time and every...
Our test car was powered by Fiat’s wonderfully smooth 75hp, 145Nm 1,238cc turbo diesel engine that is mated to a light if slightly vague five-speed gearbox. With 0-100km/h taking an...
The Mini phenomenon continues unabated. Who’d have thought that so many people would be willing to put up with a tiny boot and even less rear legroom in return for a cheeky sense of style...
The Mazda CX-7 actually is a very different proposition compared to just about anything else on the market. Looks like I won’t have to lie my way through this dinner after all. Although you may hate...
There really is no need for a rear-wheel drive, Focus-sized prestige car, but that didn’t stop BMW building one and charging €30,000 for the hub-capped base model. Realistically, you have to spend closer...
So what makes it so good? For a start, it’s sensibly powered, producing 280hp and 355Nm of torque, enough for a stonking 0-100km/h time of 6.3 seconds and a top speed limited to 250km/h...
BMW has adopted all sort of clever technologies, including high-tech batteries and auxiliary systems that decouple themselves when not in use.It paves the way for future coupé and...
Saab makes the ageing 9-3 a little sexier and a little greener. Is it enough? The engine lineup for the new 9-3 will now include new BioPower versions, capable of combining turbocharging...
The 420hp, 400Nm 4.0-litre V8 engine emits a cultured and sonorous bellow while the trick rear differential works hard to maintain the car’s lurid angle. Thanks to its sharp steering, incredible balance...
Very little to talk about in terms of changes but then again it wasn’t half bad in the first place. The new Flexifuel versions will sell well – go for the Flexi SE. The S40 and V50 have not been...
It is extremely fast and grips the road as if it had fly paper for tyres, but it’s also strangely detached and passionless to drive. It’s a fast car, yes, but the charismatic 3.2-litre V6 version...
The only area in which the Clio disappoints is in terms of its steering, which is sharp and responsive but rather lacking in proper feedback and weight. It’s a shame because in every other...
With just 105hp and 250Nm of torque the Altea XL uses its weight advantage to overcome the Ford’s performance advantage and as a result is only 1.2 seconds slower to 100km/h (it only has a five-speed...
Yeah, it’s taken a while to have our first Irish drive of the Civic Type R, but not because we were sitting here scratching ourselves waiting until we were in the mood to go out and drive one. There simply weren’t any in...
Tailpipe emissions for the C-Max are more or less the same as for the standard 1.8 C-Max, so the claimed CO2 reduction must, therefore, be calculated according to the idea that most of the carbon dioxide...
The proportions are all over the place, with a long front overhang, tiny rear overhang, big wheel arches, tiny wheels, over-sized front lights and a flat, MINI-like roofline that’s way too high when...
The TT is better proportioned in Roadster form, considerably less mundane when viewed from the rear and a perfectly cohesive piece of design regardless of whether the roof is up or down. You sense that the TT...
You’d need to have a pretty serious need for ruggedness to justify spending that kind of cash on the Defender so unless you work for some wildlife organisation or need to access...
The basic 1.4-litre Bravo is a bit of a disappointment so we'd suggest you save up the extra two grand for the 1.4 T-Jet Sport. The steering is quick but it lacks bite and feedback, while the...
Our short time with the car left me with an impression that Fiat has done a good job on the Bravo. It promises a lot in an already crowded segment...
An excellent car made even better, the Cee’d SW is good value, well equipped, good to drive and practical. It is 235mm longer than the hatch and 10mm higher with roof bars. The Cee’d estate...
We’re in the new Audi A8 4.2 TDi and they’re in what looks like the next 7-Series and to compound matters I’m pointing a rather large camera at them. It had showdown written all over it. Naturally...
Piloting a modern hot hatch is nothing like driving an old-school pocket rocket. The speeds are higher but with ever improving levels of tyre grip and sophisticated drivers aids, they actually feel...
The BMW needs more feel, better composure and more excitement. Price-wise the 335i is something of a bargain at €70,000, while the €85,000 S5 is pretty steep given you need to throw...
Judging by the sales figures for the 5-Series and by the car’s ubiquity on Irish roads, it really didn’t take long for a prosperous Ireland to overlook the somewhat odd looks of the 5-Series and fall...
The 207 added some much-needed testosterone to the smaller end of the Peugeot family. It is a car we liked here at new car, so we had high hopes for the new CC. Peugeot here in Ireland...
The optional tan leather lifts the interior ambience and makes it feel expensive and classy. In Titanium specification there are handsome 17” wheels...
‘Intelligent’ mode is ideal for normal driving, in traffic etc., as there is a more relaxed throttle response and reduced engine torque and maximum power. ‘Sport’ mode gives a quicker throttle response...
A solid, lockable blind can be slid forward as far as the rear-view mirror, making the Astra feel entirely normal when you don’t feel like star gazing, but this blind is also home to the sun visors...
Appearance-wise, you can see it’s not the most futuristic pickup on the market but at least it still looks like a pickup rather than a luxury SUV with the back lopped off (giving tanned people somewhere to put their...
The interior instrumentation now glows vodka-bar blue and there are some new colours and trims, too. Except it doesn’t really look all that different, which is good news for current owners like my irate...
The Civic Hybrid is intended to take on the Toyota Prius saloon head on. Available as a saloon only –mainly because this is intended to sell in the US market, which tends not to like hatchbacks...
The SUV is really going through the most basic form of evolution. The genre has been around for quite a while now and buyers like SUVs, but it seems like they’re starting to lose anything that is superfluous...
There are an increasing number of car buyers who not only want to save a few bob on fuel, but also wish to do their bit for the environment. However, compromise is not something the modern...
The Santa Fe’s 2.2-litre common-rail turbo diesel has more power and torque than the Outlander, but is a bit slower because of its big-boned bodywork. Despite its huskiness, its 0-100 km/h time of...
The Fiat Panda is a good basis for such a model, as even the entry level versions have more gusto and character than your average city car. As the name suggests, this new variant is fitted with a sporty...
When Citroën unveiled the Pluriel Concept car at the Frankfurt Motorshow in 1999 I have to admit I rolled my eyes and thought: “Here we go –another silly concept with no bearing whatsoever on reality!” But then...
The 300bhp engine sounds terrific and it drives well. It’s not as overtly sporting as a Porsche 911, but it’s more engaging than a Mercedes SL and more comfortable than a BMW 6-series...
Right, power on here,” instructs the instructor, so I comply. The Porsche Cayenne Turbo, all 2,335kg of it, slews through the first corner at Brands Hatch and down the steep Paddock Hill Bend at frightening speed...
The driving position is excellent, the seats (narrower now, to generate more space) are as comfortable as ever while the general aesthetic is simple and pleasing, with a variety of trims...
Quick, agile, gorgeous and cool, but not involving enough for purist tastes. The Esseesse is better, but for a price. Fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, the GPA now has a top speed of 208km/h...
The Civic Type R isn’t offered without climate control or ESP. As drivers, then, we’re more pampered and less skilled than we ever were. Which is why you should save yourself nine...
The old Fabia had a pleasantly muscular look to it, crisp and purposeful, but the new car has none of the outgoing car’s (or the Opel’s) cohesion or sharpness. Unusually, the interior of the...
Piloting a modern hot hatch is nothing like driving an old-school pocket rocket. The speeds are higher but with ever improving levels of tyre grip and sophisticated drivers aids, they actually feel slower. Hot hatches...
The basic engines in these cars are likely to be the main sellers, and performance in both is little more than adequate. The Audi 1.6-litre is a 102bhp 4-cylinder with 148Nm of torque available. 0-100km/h takes...
The R8 is entering a very tricky segment. There’s no doubting the fact that Audi has given the R8 the armoury to compete against such competition very effectively. It’s got the most exotic layout of any of its rivals...
The gear change is light and although the steering does not give as much feedback as it might, the road-holding is impressive. The Volvo is an incredibly comfortable car to drive and like so many...
The way this vehicle sort of snuck into Ireland and the fact that we are supposed to get more excited about the GTi version to follow might give the impression that we should largely overlook this car...
The last time I felt this way I was riding a Confederate Hellcat through New Orleans. The Hellcat is a two-wheeled, 137hp, 200Nm monster that threatens to rips itself out from under you and hurl...
Amputation is a nasty thing. But 'amputazione' somehow sounds kind of cool, certainly to a generation brought up on Peig Sayers. Given the choice between suffering Peig's story and removal of a limb, I'm not certain...
As I relinquished a vice-like grip on the door handle, I managed to mumble "I have a lot to learn" to my driver. He diffidently replied, "So do I!" The driver in question was none other than Dirk Schroysman...
Last month, we test drove the Golf GT 1.4 TSI and liked it rather a lot. Our only complaints referred to the rather restrained look of the GT and the somewhat on/off power delivery of the supercharged...
Let’s be clear about this: buying the new Aston Martin Vantage Sportshift won’t make you James Bond. You won’t have a licence to kill, you won’t take Eva Green to bed and you’ll look like a plonker when you...
The 1.5-litre engine is easily exhausted by some pretty tame inclines and the handling is not very impressive either. One would hope that most Terios would spend their time in the town or city...
Mitsubishi are quite clearly sick of being the whipping boy of the media. The problems the company has had are well documented and someone, somewhere inside Mitsubishi’s HQ is sick of it...
Compound charging. Sounds like a new and exciting way for your mortgage provider to rip you off but, in actuality, it refers to the simple concept of force-feeding an engine with both a supercharger...
The Opel Corsa OPC is loud and flashy enough to stand out in a class packed with loud, flashy cars. Sharp looks, generous equipment levels and nice details like the slim, racing-style Recaro seats...
The Porsche Cayman and Audi TT are amongst the newest coupés to hit the market in recent months but are worlds apart in terms of execution… and price. The TT is based on the people’s car...
I could sit here and waffle on about dynamics and braking distances and performance figures but, frankly, I’d be wasting everybody’s time...
First to the looks, and our Jaguar blings so loud it hurts my ears. Everything that’s not British Racing Green is dipped in chrome and polished to within an inch of its life and it gets so much attention...
The 340 bhp, 5.7-litre Dodge can be ordered with a louder exhaust system that frees up ten more horsepower. This all time classic will let you relive the movie chases of your childhood...

Citroen C6: C’est fantastique, but doesn’t handle, could do with a nicer interior, isn’t all that innovative and costs way too much. The wheelbase is a massive 2,900mm giving you class-leading...
Official figures have the manual,160 bhp,2.0-liter MX-5 reaching 100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds with a top speed of 210 km/h, while the 177 bhp,2.4-litre Solstice supposedly needs only 7.2 seconds to...
