Verdict

In 2015 the Ibiza received an upgrade, but it would take the eagle eyed of you to notice any exterior differences. What’s new in the Ibiza is mainly on the inside. One thing that the Ibiza offers that a lot of its competitors don’t is a wide range of body types. The Ibiza SC is the smallest, but they also make a five door and an estate version (ST) available, and for those of you who like a sportier ride, you can always have a look at the Ibiza Cupra. The Ibiza is probably the most stylish in its segment from the VW Group. It’s flashier than both the Volkswagen Polo and the Skoda Fabia, and of course it all comes from the same DNA.

Performance

The most affordable engine option is the 1.0 litre MPI petrol engine. This set-up offers maximum power of 75 bhp, maximum torque of 95Nm (between 3,000 & 4,300rpm), and it will bring you from 0-100 km/h in 14.3 seconds. We’re told that the maximum speed of the vehicle is 172 km/h. The engine is sluggish, but potential buyers should be fully aware of this in advance. This same engine can be found in the SEAT Mii. Other options include a 1.2 TSI that offers 90 bhp or 110 bhp. The diesel offering is a 1.4 TDI offering 90 bhp. The next engine option is available only with the very-fun Ibiza Cupra. This compares nicely to the Fiesta ST. The engine is a 1.4 litre TSI petrol that gives some nice-enough stats. Maximum power is 180 bhp and it offers a maximum speed of 228 km/h. Maximum torque is 250Nm at 4,500rpm. This will take you from 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. This engine is mated to a DSG-auto transmission.

Ride & Handling

This is where the Ibiza shines. It offers a good suspension set up that is suited to bumps in the road as well as the bends and turns that B-roads have to offer. The steering is well-weighted and it handles corners with ease.

Refinement

When getting to motorway speeds the strain of the engine climbing the speedometer is very audible in the 1.0 litre engine, which is disappointing because apart from that the interior is refined enough. There is a small bit of wind and road noise but it would be on par with the class-topping Fiesta here.

Quality & Reliability

The upgrade received by the Ibiza was focused a lot on interior quality. The entire infotainment system is new. It now has MirrorLink and is more connected than ever before. The materials are softer and more appealing than before. The plastics don’t feel as cheap as they used to either.

Safety & Security

The Ibiza received a five star Euro NCAP rating in 2011. It received 82% for adult occupancy and 77% for child occupancy. Pedestrian safety scored 59%. The upgraded Ibiza comes with a “Multicollision Braking System”, a “Tiredness Recognition System”, “LED Day Running Lights” and “Hill Hold Control”. Also available with the Ibiza is a parking assist system with an integrated rear view camera.

Space & Practicality

The Ibiza is a versatile vehicle and there is a lot of choice in terms of space. The Ibiza SC compares well with the Opel Corsa, the Fabia and the Fiesta. The three-door is roomy to the front and while the rear space is not bad, it is difficult to get into. The five-door is a bit more practical and for those of you who want maximum versatility, there is an estate (ST) version available. Leg room can be a bit tight for taller people.
