Fun to drive, better value lately, fine engines.

It’s an oddball version of the Altea.

  • Summary

It’s an oddball version of the Altea.

Style & Design
6/10

The Toledo used to be a Leon with a boot, but now it’s a completely pointless Altea with a boil on its backside. It has the Altea’s aggressive snout and slashed sheet metal, but what’s that back end about? It’s not only pointless, it’s also an eyesore.

Performance
7/10

The 1.6 can drag the Toledo to 100km/h in a respectable 12.9 seconds and top 181km/h. The 1.9 TDi is a smidge quicker (12.4/183km/h). The 2.0 is faster (9.6/206km/h) but the 2.0 TDi isn’t far behind (9.9s/201km/h) and is much better on the open road.

Ride & Handling
8/10

The Toledo is a surprisingly spirited handler. It’s based on the Golf’s platform so it steers with precision and doesn’t roll much in corners. The brakes are strong too, but the ride is rather firm for a small MPV.

Interior & Ergonomics
8/10

Like the Altea, the interior has a soft, organic shape to it that curls all the controls towards the driver, making for a cosy and simple-to-use driving environment. The all-red illumination hurts the eyes at times, but otherwise it’s tough to fault the Altea’s cabin.

Quality & Refinement
8/10

Being based on the Golf’s sophisticated platform, you can expect the Toledo to ride with composure (it’s a tiny bit too firm, though) and isolate occupants from the road well. Quality is up to VW standards too, but some plastics still aren’t quite as good.

Safety
9/10

The Todedo’s sister car, the Altea, got an exemplary 5-Star NCAP score equipped with the same front, side and curtain airbags, traction control, front belt pre-tensioners with load limiters, 3-point rear belts and headrests for all seats, and ISOFIX child seat anchors. ESP features on some models.

Space & Practicality
7/10

The rear seats don’t do anything clever like sliding, flipping or disappearing into the floor. There’s decent room in there though, and there are over 30 storage places in the cabin, as well as a huge boot. You thought the Altea was a bit pointless? This defies all logic.

Value & Running Costs
5/10

The Toledo prices were slashed in mid-2006, making it better value. Even though it’s now only a grand more than an Altea, what are you really getting apart from an uglier rump and a tiny bit more boot space? Get an Altea, or if you really need a bigger boot, an Altea XL.

Equipment
9/10

The R has electric front windows, remote locks, A/C and a CD player. The S adds 16” alloys, foglights, leather steering with audio controls, two-zone climate control, rear electric windows, electric folding mirrors, a trip computer and cruise control.

Engine Specifications
8/10

Four engines are offered: a willing but overworked 102bhp/148Nm 1.6, a gruff but torquey 105bhp/250Nm 1.9TDi, a perky 150bhp/200Nm 2.0 and a superbly smooth and grunty 140bhp/320Nm 2.0TDi. There are no bad engines really, but the 2.0TDi is best here.

12 APR
3/5

These cars are very underrated by the press....it is after all a clone of the excellent MK5 Golf, and therefore all of its siblings, eg Golf+, Touran, Audi A4, Skoda Octavia etc also. Its styling may be a bit 'different', but at least it is different. Extremely roomy inside with a huge boot, it is comfortable, ultra reliable, well built, very safe, and economical for a big heavy car (~ 45 mpg on diesel). Great high seating position, big square doors, just like a Zafira / Megane sized MPV, but with just 5 seats. As a used car, it represents excellent value due to initial depreciation...you are getting a large Golf TDi for Kia money. And just as strong and reliable. Same goes for is almost identical siblings the Altea and Altea XL. All 3 are virtually the same car...just different boots. A bit confusing really, but so it the Golf/Golf+/Golf variant (coming soon). And SEAT dealers are usually a lot less snotty than VW ones too. Very Recommended ++
