Verdict

Although we have not yet driven the Skoda Karoq, it is due to the Irish market in December 2017. We are compiling a buyer’s guide on the Yeti’s replacement. We are basing this off the spec sheet and what our colleagues in the industry thought of the car.

Performance

The Karoq is available with a range of petrol and diesel engines. The 1.0TSI 115hp with a 6-speed manual in Ambition trim level is the starting point. If four-wheel-drive is on the cards, buyers will need to choose the Style trim level and opt for a 2.0TDI 150hp unit. The 4x4 is available with both a 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG automatic. A 1.6TDI 115hp diesel unit is also available with both DSG and manual. A new 1.5TSI, replacing the 1.4TSI unit in the Yeti, is available in both trim levels with a manual only.

Ride & Handling

The Karoq measures in at 4.4m, almost .2m longer than the outgoing Yeti. It is said that the Karoq drives well on both rough terrain and on the motorway. Skoda hopes that the new 1.5TSI will do well but we reckon the 1.0TSI will be a good seller being available in both automatic and manual. The cabin is mostly quiet too with some wind noise coming from the large wing mirrors, it is said. The Karoq comes standard on 17-inch alloys with the Ambition trim level and 18-inch alloys coming standard with Style.

Refinement

In theory, the cabin should be fairly refined from engine noise with a petrol unit. We have yet to test the new 1.5TSI unit but it should be a quieter than one of the 2.0 or 1.6 diesel units. Skoda have ditched the lowest trim level for the Karoq and trimmed it down to Ambition and Style. This is advantageous in terms of trim level. As standard on Ambition comes 17-inch alloys, cruise control, rear parking sensors and an 8-inch touch screen infotainment.

Quality & Reliability

Interior plastics should be good coming from a Volkswagen Group product. The previous Yeti’s interior was of good quality with a familiar Skoda interior. The Karoq’s interior layout is similar to that of the Kodiaq, no surprise there. This is not a bad thing, however. The Kodiaq’s interior is well put together and laid out smartly.

Safety & Security

As standard on Ambition trim is emergency braking, ISOFIX on the two outer seats to the rear, airbags including curtain airbags and emergency call function. The Skoda Karoq scored five stars in the NCAP rating, the same as the Yeti.

Space & Practicality

New to the Skoda range are the Vario-Flex seats. This allows the rear seats to be removed completely from the car increasing the boot space from 521 litres to 1,810 litres. Skoda’s motto is Simply Clever and they incorporate Simply Clever features throughout it’s cars. For example in the Karoq, there is an umbrella under the front passenger seat, a removable torch in the boot and a large open plan centre cubby hole, to name but a few.
