The second-generation Octavia is not only bigger, it’s also a more confident and striking design. The proportions are spot on and while it won’t turn many heads, it is a handsome thing when you actually stop to look at it. The estate is just as well rounded, if no more exciting.
1.4 is slow: 0-100 in 15.5 seconds. 102bhp 1.6 is better (0-100 in 12.3) but 115bhp 1.6 is livelier (11.2) and more economical. 1.9TDi pulls hard (11.9) but is rough beside the quick 2.0TDi (9.6). 2.0 is nippy (9.4) but lacks TDi torque. 2.0T RS is fast (7.3), but 2.0TDi RS isn’t far behind (8.5).
The Octavia is more comfort-oriented than the Golf on which it’s based, offering a cossetting ride and competent, rather than scintillating, handling. More steering feel and less body roll would be nice. RS is a hoot - about 90% the fun of a Golf GTi, but more comfy and refined.
The interior of the Octavia puts us in mind of the old-model Passat - indeed, it uses much of its switchgear and parts. Not that there’s anything wrong with VW cast-offs. The Octavia has a fabulous driving position, great seats and simple, easy-to-use controls.
The Octavia, more than any previous Skoda, has an upmarket feel to it that almost rivals that of its VW sibling. Construction is first rate and even most of the plastics feel ritzy. Ride quality and quietness rivals the Golf too, making it feel more expensive than it actually is.
Every Octavia (4-Star NCAP score) has front and side airbags, traction control, ISOFIX child seat mounts and three 3-point seat belts and headrests in the rear. ESP is a €600 option on most models and curtain airbags aren’t available.
The Octavia tops the small family class for practicality. The front is spacious, but the rear is huge for a car in this class. The boot is gargantuan, especially in the Estate, which is almost van-like. You want the most practical small family car on the market? This is it.
The Octavia represents a lot of car for the money, but reasonable spec and performance involves spending a few euro. It’s not as good value as it used to be, but resale values have got firmer as word has got out about its huge practicality. Running costs are low, but more power brings bigger bills.
The Classic has electric f/windows & mirrors, CD player, traction control & remote locks. The Ambiente adds a trip computer, rear electric windows & foglights. The Elegance adds a leather steering, climate control & 15” alloys. The RS enjoys 17” alloys, sports suspension & seats & a 6-CD changer.
The overworked 75bhp 1.4 is best avoided. The 102bhp 1.6 performs adequately, but the 115bhp 1.6 is smoother and much perkier. The 105bhp 1.9TDi is a bit rough compared to the silky 140bhp 2.0TDi. The 150bhp is lively, but the 170bhp 2.0TDi and 200bhp 2.0 turbo in the RS are genuinely fast.
