Style & Design
6/10

Subaru might see the Outback as an SUV but to the rest of us it's just a jacked up Legacy with too much plastic cladding. It's alright looking from most angles but what's the point?

Performance
7/10

The Outback's performance is much improved since the old 2.5-litre petrol engine was dropped. The 2.0TD zips to 100km/h in 9.2 seconds and tops 200km/h which is quick by SUV standards, not that the Outback is really as SUV.

Ride & Handling
8/10

There's decent levels of grip and the ride quality is rather good but because the Outback is softly sprung it's less engaging and rolls more than the Legacy wagon.

Interior & Ergonomics
7/10

The interior is made of better-quality materials than other Subarus and it's a paragon of simplicity, but it's rather drab-looking compared to rivals. A new model isn't far away now. The driving position is excellent, though.

Quality & Refinement
7/10

As with all Subarus, the Outback is exceptionally well made and the materials feel more upmaket than other models. It rides well but it's still a bit noisy compared to more premium rivals. It's starting to feel its age now,

Safety
7/10

The Outback comes with all-wheel drive, anti-whiplash headrests, a rear LSD, six airbags, ISOFIX, HID headlamps and ESC as standard. There are no options, not even park aids or blind-spot indicators.

Space & Practicality
9/10

The Outback, like the Legacy wagon, is a big car and offers lots of legroom and reasonable headroom in the back. The boot is huge and thanks to slightly better ground clearance than the Legacy it can even be taken across fields. Only the lack of 7-seats counts against it.

Value & Running Costs
6/10

It's not the most solid of investments, perhaps. The current Outback will be replaced soon and up to now it's a rare beast which means resale will probably be an issue. New diesel makes it a safer bet and cheaper to run, too, though.

Equipment
8/10

All have 2-zone climate control, 6 CD changer, 17-inch alloys, cruise control, ESC, HID lights and heated, leather-trimmed power seats with memory. A self-leveling rear suspension is also standard and there are no options.

Engine Specifications
9/10

All petrol engines have been dropped from the Outback range, leaving just the smooth and gutsy 2.0-litre 'Boxer' diesel to power the Outback along. It's a superb engine but the lack of an automatic (not that Subaru's 4-speed relics are much to shout about) does hinder its appeal.
