The Suzuki Ignis compact crossover has received an all new update for 2017. Production of the previous model ceased in 2008 and now Suzuki are attempting to breathe new life into the Ignis. This new model was first unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. The Ignis was launched in the Japanese market in February of that year and was well received by customers with over 18,000 units sold as of November 2016. Now it has hit the European market and Suzuki hope to have similar success over here.
The Suzuki Ignis boasts a 1.2 litre Dualjet petrol engine with an output of 90bhp. The four cylinder engine offers a maximum torque of 120Nm at 4,400 rpm. A hybrid version is also available, which does help in terms of fuel economy.
The Ignis drives quite well and it offers a nice amount of grip. The 1.2 litre engine provides a nippy driving experience through the lower gears. It is however, slow to reach its top speed (0-100km/h in over 11 seconds). It can also offer some body role on corners.
Once you take the Ignis up to speeds above 80km/h problems begin to reveal themselves. It’s fairly slow to reach its top speed and there is a lot of road and wind noise inside the cabin when you’re cruising at any speed above 80-90km/h. Things can get very loud.
The Suzuki Ignis is a reasonably priced car so you shouldn’t step into it expecting first class materials. That being said; although the materials feel fairly cheap to the touch, they are noticeably of better quality than that of the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross. The interior feels more secure and sturdy than the S-Cross as well. They have disguised the cheap feel well by making a nice selection of colours available within the vehicle.
The Suzuki Ignis scored a 3 star rating in the Euro NCAP rating system. It scored 79% for adult safety, 79% for child safety, 67% for pedestrian safety and 25% for safety assist. Six passenger airbags come as standard on all models. Other features such as a lane departure warning function and an optional dual camera brake support improve the safety of the Ignis.
The Ignis SZ3 model has a fixed rear seat and the luggage area has a capacity of 267 litres with the rear seats in the upright position. The rear seats of the SZ-T and SZ5 models sits on rails which allows you to slide them 165mm to either improve legroom or luggage capacity – these models have a 50/50 split in the rear seats. The luggage capacity increases to 514 litres with the rear seats folded down and can be further increased to 1,100 litres if fully loaded to the roof line. With the seats up though it offers 267 litres in the 2WD versions and 204 in the 4x4 models.
