The Toyota Verso as we know it now was shown to the world in 2009. It came as a replacement for the Toyota Corolla Verso. Like any good compact MPV, it is available with a choice of five or seven seats. Its main competition would come from the very popular Ford C-Max, the Citroen C4 Picasso and the Renault Scenic. While the Verso is a good looking MPV, many would criticise that it doesn’t offer the same type of space as some of its rival. However, this is a versatile vehicle and should suit many families.
There is just one engine available to the Irish market and that is the 1.6 litre D-4D diesel offering. This offers maximum power of 112 bhp and according to Toyota the maximum speed of the vehicle is 180 km/h. We’re also told that this machine will bring you from 0-100 km/h in 12.7 seconds. Rivals would offer more engine choices in their range but the 1.6 litre engine does deliver its power smoothly to the engine. This engine is efficient and according to Toyota it will return a combined fuel economy of 4.5 litres per 100 km which in old money is 62.8 mpg.
The Verso offers a comfortable ride that should suit most MPV customers down to the ground. It grips the road well and surprisingly it actually controls its body well on corners. The suspension is good and road imperfections don’t feel like a major problem for the Verso.
While the diesel engine does provide its power smoothly it can still be a little loud – especially when accelerating to motorway speeds. It would suffer more here than some of its rivals. However, the engine noise does dim down once at cruising speeds. The car masks wind and road noise surprisingly well though.
The Verso comes with Toyota’s most up-to-date infotainment system, Toyota Touch 2. This features a colour screen and is compatible with Bluetooth and USB. The cabin is spacious and comfortable. The instrument panel sits on the dash and is directed towards the driver. The plastics within the vehicle do appear to be a bit dull but they appear to be hard-wearing, which is always a good sign in family vehicles like this.
One of the most important things about a family MPV is that it’s safe and reliable. Thankfully the Verso proving to be a safe machine. It received a full five stars in the Euro NCAP. It scored highly for both adult and child occupancy with a score of 89% and 75% respectively. For pedestrian safety it scored 69%. There are seven airbags surrounding the interior of the vehicle and it comes with an Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution. Another nice touch is that this vehicle comes with Hill-start Assist Control as standard – which will be good for those who are not too confident about their hill starts.
If you opt for only five seats in this vehicle the space is very good, but it feels smaller than the likes of the Ford C-Max or the Citroen C4 Picasso. If you go for the seven seats the room to the front and rear is ample with no major head or leg room issues. Seats six and seven are ideal for children. If the two extra seats are in use the boot area obviously suffers, but this is common among MPVs. With those seats down the space is more than adequate for most items a family would ship around.
