Style & Design
7/10

The S40's look is impressively modern, unlike its bland predecessor. It has sleek lines, purposeful shoulders and a broad, muscular stance. It might be an imposing Audi A4 rival were it not a bit too small. 2007 facelift was extremely minor, with only front and rear light and detail changes.

Performance
6/10

The 1.6 feels sluggish (0-100km/h in 11.9 seconds, 185km/h top speed). The 1.8 isn’t much better (10.9/200km/h). The 1.6D is no livelier than the numbers suggest (12.0/190km/h). The auto-only 2.4D is quick (8.5/225km/h), as is the 2.4 petrol (8.2/215km/h) The 2.5 T5 is hot-hatch fast (6.8/240km/h).

Ride & Handling
7/10

The Ford Focus-based S40 is, unsurprisingly, pretty entertaining to drive. The chassis is very balanced and it rides with great maturity, although there’s not as much steering feel as you get in the Ford. It’s more fun than an A4, but needs AWD to be properly competitive in this class.

Interior & Ergonomics
8/10

The interior is very well thought out and extremely easy to use. The switches are clear and logical and the ‘floating’ centre console is a cool, if pointless, touch. The driving position is exceptional as well. 2007 facelift upped specification slightly but its otherwise the same.

Quality & Refinement
8/10

The S40 is well put together, the interior plastics and materials are particularly pleasing and post revision switchgear looks and feels a little more upmarket. The ride has also improved since the 2007 tweaks, so it’s now a better cruiser than ever and you have to love those seats.

Safety
8/10

The S40 boasts a 5-Star Euro NCAP score and has ESP; front, side and curtain airbags; load limiters on all but the middle-rear seat; anti-whiplash front seats; three 3-point rear seatbelts and three headrests in the rear. ISOFIX child seat anchors are, disgracefully, optional.

Space & Practicality
7/10

Because the Focus saloon on which the S40 is based is so roomy, interior space is on a par with most rivals, and it is almost as roomy inside as some bigger cars. Boot space is merely adequate, and the opening is narrow, but in-cabin storage space is decent.

Value & Running Costs
6/10

Compared to the Audi A4 or BMW 3-Series, the S40 is great value and very well equipped. All but the 2.4 and T5 are frugal. However, on the downside, the S40 doesn’t make a splash like a Beemer, it won’t hold its value as well, and it is a little small overall, hurting its prestige.

Equipment
8/10

S has power windows & mirrors, leather wheel w/audio controls, cruise & climate control, 16” alloys, trip comp & ESP. Sport adds 17” alloys & bodykit. SE adds leather, six-CD changer & auto wipers. SE Lux has power driver seat, heated seats & Xenons. T5s get sport suspension, spoiler & strut brace.

Engine Specifications
7/10

Avoid the underpowered 100hp 1.6 and get the 125hp 1.8 (in VRT-rebate BioFuel spec) instead. The 170hp 2.4 is quick but the 220hp 2.5T is fast. The 109hp 1.6D copes better than the 1.6 petrol but it's still slow. The 136hp 2.0D is the best diesel as the 180hp 2.4 D5 only comes with an auto.

3/5

Stalling on start up (went back 3 times). More headlight bulbs than I can count. front headlight due to crack. Front shocks after 70k. Headlight alignment all over the place (common fault). Very noisey air con compressor (no idea why). Fault heated seat. Tracking all over the place even after it was sorted only a few months ago.
